The only time I sat in the East Stand was when we were banned from sitting there. I sat in the Upper area. The rain came in due to a leak in the roof, and when ir was sunny, the sun was straight in your face. Having legged it from the Courthouse, did I need another 200 yards, plus 50 steps to my seat? No way. So in spite of its age, I prefer the West Stand with seats constructed by our great grandfathers in 1908, not much legroom, but a pleasant ambiance.
I love it - because it’s the first turnstile I see and fall through after I’ve had a gallon of ale int TARN. Plus - the ground looks massive and great when you’re looking out of the West Stand Lower - but looks a reight shambles from other parts of the ground when yer looking into the West Stand.
Protected more from weather, good views, less queues for food and nearest turnstile from town. Also legroom on back row is 5*.
When the east stand first opened , myself & my two sons had season tickets in the upper stand just on the halfway line , but to be honest , as good as the view is I, found the concrete structure way too cold & 90% of the time the wind seems to blow into the east stand , when we went into the premier league I moved over to west stand upper & found it a lot more enjoyable & considerably warmer in the winter. A couple of years later , I moved down into the open seats but second row from the back where you get a limited roof cover & being near the half way line , myself & my grandkids get a cracking view , the people around us are friendly & we always have decent banter, love it there
First game was there donkey years ago and took kids so they could stand on a pop bottle crate at wall and now grandkids - memories - my dad sat me on a barrier - it's a family heirloom !!
Sat in lower tier about 4 or 5 years now used to sit in Ponty - close to the action can interact with players - loads of room so can sit where you want - great view of rest of stadium - easiest stand to get into, no walking all way round ground - the bogs are fantastic
Might have to give it a go. Had my ST in ESL lower for the last 10 years or so. Although I watched us beat Leeds 2 0 in the West Stand in Flickers year.
I'm not sure how they do it. Maybe there's a mini-gulag under the stadium where the prisoners create heat energy...
Same as above Great banter Close to action Access to opposition players Better when subs used to warm up in front of us
My dad took me in west, as a teenager terrace and then Brewery and then Ponty and East Stand upper. I take my lad now and West is where he comes with me. It's a nice group of people who sit around our seats, good chat and not quite as miserable as when I first started going. Leg room is rubbish but it's an easy get away at the end too.
I can shout at the lino and call him an absolute ******* ****** blind ******* and are your ******* eyes painted on . The ignorant sods never take a blind bit of notice
I started sitting in the West Stand about 15 years back, when i used to go with mi uncle, who wasn't great on his legs. We"d park near the away coaches and go in the West Stand cos it was nearest. When he stopped going I just carried on. Early and late season, downstairs, wit ruffians.. when the weather turns upstairs..
I go in there a couple of times per season for nostalgia. Block B of the West Upper (or Centre Stand as it was then) is where I watched The Reds for the first six years from 1974 with my dad (although that block has been out of bounds for ages). I prefer the East Upper for the view and the Ponty for the atmos though.
I used to sit in the West Stand but moved to the East Stand years ago.. in my opinion, the West Stand has much more character, the East stand is dull.
I had a period of not watching football then in 1992 or 3 came back with a 4 year old son .Sat in the east Barnsley Chronic upper family area next to north stand . Absolutely freezing in winter chilly winds.compensated with Bovril .Not a season ticket holder but went with son when I could get or afford it.(ex CSA) Struggled to get tickets for that Bradford match. Considering I only missed 2 matches that season should have had a season ticket Moved to Ponti end .Lower right .Season ticket.flickered with west stand (seated)was there when it was standing originally. Did north on my 40th red hot sunny day Barnsley fans on one side Portsmouth on other.and that bell. Now in Ponti end left upper
