The earliest proper TV footage from matches seems to be from the early 1980's, so I'm assuming it was around then.
Before it was built TV cameras used to be on legs in the Paddock either side of the tunnel. When we were televised at home against Halifax in about 1970 I sat on a stanchion in front of the camera which was right in front of where the J Hill & Sons advert is above. It was a good view and I did my best to get my scarf on telly by repeatedly throwing it up in front of the camera. It didn't work.
Not 100%sure but before the gantry I think the two doors on the extension used to open revealing a tv camera inside .
If I had to guess at any of the players in that photo I'd go for Dave Booth on the left and Kenny Brown taking the throw. Any advances on that? I could be way off the mark.
Thank god for that I thought I was going senile .lol. Think it was late sixties early seventies when I noticed them probably for the big match programme or whatever it was. Think the gantry’s in the stand were for when we had live matches
I've just been checking the match on the net.. Les Lea was in the squad that year and I agree, I think it's him. It was 1972. We drew 0-0 and got relegated that season. Finished below...Mansfiled, Tranmere, York, Rochdale, Halifax, Wrexham and just above Torquay. Villa won the league. Happy days... ???
Great to hear the old stand referred to as the 'Paddock' instead of its rename the 'Brewery Stand' was on the east side of the ground, but the old players tunnel, where the cameras were, was (and still is) in the west stand not the Paddock. I stood in the Paddock in the 1950s & 1960s with my Dad.
Looks great does that. It's a shame the gantry couldn't be somehow placed elsewhere and get a paint job done on the sign.
First time I can remember cameras at Oakwell was Rochdale in 79. We lost 3 0, but I'm pretty sure the gantry was added in the 80s. We probably got a bit more coverage once we got out of the bottom two divisions, but not enough to call it "Elland Rd south"
