    Barnsley area seen quite a few disasters int mines,Kendray 384 men and boys, Lundhill 189 men and boys, Houghton in 1975 5 died and loads more smaller disasters where one or 2 died.

    Most of the big disasters happened before the NCB came into being, as a miner myself safety was paramount in my time 1964 to 1990 but of course accidents happen like in any industry.

    I often stop and look at the memorial whenever I am passing. Its always so quiet there and feels so eerie when you think of what happened. The statues of the kids crawling out always sends a shiver down my spine

    My daughter wrote and recorded this song to commemorate the Huskar pit disaster in which two of her great, great, great uncles died. She performed it acoustically at the concert on Thursday night in Silkstone church. The only good thing to come out of this disaster was the legislation to raise the age of children to work in the pits.
