Watched the Andrew Marr show with Theresa May/May Not this morning. She was asked what advice Trump had given her regarding Britain's stance on Brexit. She confided that Trump had advised her to sue the EU, but she didn't cite any reasons he gave for that course of action.
Article in the Independent doesn't give any reason for Trump's advice to May/Maynot. It is simply sue the entire EU bloc. His other piece of advice was whatever happens don't walk away. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/...-may-sue-eu-advice-negotiations-a8447991.html
Add the leaders of places like China, Saudi Arabia and Turkey to the list too. All have records far worse than Trump yet they visit and the protests are non existent by comparison. I don't like Trump, either as a man or a president, but the protests against him are, as you say, very inconsistent. I dare say that many, not all, of the protesters were virtue signalling which is not a good reason for large scale protests that cost millions to keep secure.
Furthermore, not one protester again Erdogan when he visited. A murderer of the Kurds, a virtual dictator and a downright seedy individual.
That's what's been happening the last 30/40 years , if you know your history you can go even further back . Remember post gulf war 1 ? Bill Clinton's no fly zone and imbargo . Killed about a million Iraqi s , they could nt even import penicillin . Of course everyone looked in the other direction ,no protests , nothing . Trump was always going to put an ugly mask on what horrible things the US has been doing all along ......
He allowed one of himself to be flown, he is a Muslim and a leader, so the answer is a rather simple yes
A point of interest. When all US presidents travel abroad they take their own team of chefs with them. The president only eats food cooked by them. They follow the recipes set by the host country.
Obama didn't try to split NATO Obama isn't a racist Obama didn't start a trade war with everyone on the planet. Obama isn't a mysoginist Obama didn't criticise his allies & then call dictators 'nice guys'. Obama wasn't only interested in self aggrandisement Obama didn't move the US embassy to Jerusalem. Obama didn't order the separation of families at the border Obama didn't lie daily Obama didn't call into question the foundations of democracy (free press & independent judiciary) Obama didn't renege on the Paris climate accord As you say, I could go on...
I agree there are a lot worse countries (and leaders) than Trump as POTUS. The point is people have a right to choose who to protest against. I have been busy working all weekend & wouldn't waste my time going on a protest like this, as to my mind it will do no good. I also think the visit was a massive publicity stunt for May, that has backfired big time, with Trump putting May down over Brexit. There isn't a cat in hell's chance of getting any sort of favourable deal with the USA out of the EU.
I'm merely making the point that Obama / trump are as bad as each other , it's just that Obama talked nice so no one noticed . Trumps not the problem , he s a symptom of a far greater problem within American politics . I don't know your level of interest in American politics but above is a short clip on the 1964 presidential elections , Goldwater Vs Johnson . Goldwater was the racist bogeyman , Johnson was the friendly liberal who passed civil rights and then went on to kill millions in Vietnam . It's rinse and repeat politics in America and Obama is nothing more than another Lyndon b Johnson .
I don't disagree JP. I wouldn't have taken part in the protests even if I lived on the street that it passed through. Not because I disagree with people's right to protest, because this is a freedom that makes our country great, but because I find a lot of the points that people are protesting about to be very inconsistent. Protest policy by all means but I think a lot of the protests were on personality and when the personality in question is the president of the USA there is a risk that the main issues get lost amongst the virtue signalling. Trump proved himself to be unfit for office just by comparing his interview in The Sun with his speech when stood next to May. He really isn't cut out for such high office. Furthermore I heard his full post NATO interview on LBC and quite frankly it was like listening to a school debating society. The worrying point is that the speech was from the most powerful man in the world. When protesting policy you have to be completely consistent or you shouldn't bother because it doesn't help at all.
It's in today's paper that the security bill to protect the President whilst in the U.K. is expected to be the highest ever. As well as 150 US agents flying in with him, 10,000 UK police officers from all parts of Britain were immobilised to help protect him. The total bill is expected to reach circa £30 million and will be met by the British taxpayers. The cost of security in Scotland , which included setting up roadblocks and having police snipers on 24 hour guard, has been estimated at £5 million.
Oooh gosh. Maybe if he doesn't you might come and shoot me. Hard to take anything you say seriously really.
https://www.npr.org/sections/itsall...itt-romney-finally-takes-credit-for-obamacare If your refering to Obamacare it was Romney care all along , cooked up by the insurance companies to make more money . In 2010 the Dems under Obama controlled the house , and senate (filibuster proof) and could have quite easily pushed through single payer . But what did he do , exactly what the big healthcare companies told him to do . But that's it with Obama , all smoke and mirrors .
And Trump and the Republicans attitude is......rip up any vestige of free healthcare. Every man for himself and if you can't pay tough. Same attitudes as with the EPA, with Health and Safety, with banking regulation repeal. Screw the individual at every turn in favour of big business and the rich.
