I need some help. Can any BarnsleyFC fans remember the Reds being featured on Newsnight? The report starts with views of a snowbound town and Oakwell and David Icke walking out of the players tunnel. They interview Norman Hunter, Rimmo, Brian Glover, Charlie Williams & the tea ladys. Also they show Sniffer taking the team down pit and interview some miners.after the date. I think its Early Jan 82 as its based around the Blackpool FA cup tie as footage from that game is shown. Does it ring any bells with anyone?
Yes - and we lost to Blackpool that night, announced at the end of the item. Very embarrassing. Story on the lines of how Barnsley's booming gates were bucking the trend of falling attendances. Newsnight was presented by John Tusa I seem to remember.
Records say it was Tuesday 5th January 1982 https://www.11v11.com/teams/blackpool/tab/opposingTeams/opposition/Barnsley/ We played Liverpool at Anfield a week later and played a bit better. The footage from the Grimethorpre pit visit would have been December 1979 after the 7-0 defeat at Reading.
Yea I've got that Blackpool game down as the 5th so I'm asuming the feature was broadcast later on that week. The pit footage was originally broadcast on The News At Ten at the time.
