Against teams who want to play nice passing football like Rochdale and Oxford and, to a certain extent, Bradford, we're going to get over 100 points. We go at them like a bull elephant in stud, like a ******* battering ram. I've never seen anything like it. We frighten the opposition to death within the first minute. It's genuinely awe inspiring. There's not another forward in the football league with the tenacity and stamina of Bradshaw. You'll not tire him out or wear him down, he'll be at your throat in the 90th minute just as quickly and viciously as he was in the first. Moore's not far behind and he's the size of a mountain. And we don't play with diminutive wingers who like to do a few fancy flicks and won't track back. Potts and Thiam look like they belong in the boxing ring. We've got the best defensive line in the league and it's our front four. Then we've got Mowatt and Dougall to pick up the pieces, who can both play a bit, and a tank named Cavare. Question is, how many such teams are there in this division? Is the Spanish style of possession football the dominant force in this league? I didn't think it was. My memory of league 1 is of much bigger tougher footballers and playing it, not necessarily long, but more direct. But I don't follow League 1 football. I don't know what to expect. If the opposition don't play in their own half, if they get back in numbers and we have to work openings, stretching the play wide and relying on skill to get round the back, we're going to find it a lot more difficult. We don't have those sort of players. When we come up against expansive teams who attempt to build from the back, we will blow them away.
Oddly enough, it strikes me as a team that would do really well in the Championship. I think you're right, and our big problem is going to come once teams work this out and start playing for a point. I could easily see us racing to 30 points from 12 or so games, and then coming up against brick walls for the rest of the season. Hopefully, should it happen, by that point we'll have worked out how to counter it. It does strike me that getting an early goal will always be key. Loads of teams will look at Wimbledon and play for 0-0, but there's not many who'll play like that at 0-1. I still get the feeling that if we'd scored one on Saturday we'd have run away with it.
Not rocket science....get down the wings to the bye line and pull it back...no defenders wants to defend a cross facing his own goal...we need the wingers to do it , getting Isgrove and Hedges fit is the key...or loans if their injuries are long term.
Fully agree with this. I am a little concerned that we will play most of the season against teams playing 10 behind the ball desperately trying to keep the score down.
01226 211211 The literal translation for rocket science appears to be Raketenwissenschaft. But it appears no one would use that word in an eqivalent context when trying to say "its not rocket science". There seems to be many variations of an equivalent german phrase but one is "Das ist doch keine Wissenschaft." *courtesy of google. You could write all the german I know on a stamp.
I think those supporters who travel to away games will see the best games this season. At home, I can envisage more Wimbledon-type games than Oxford-type games. But even then, not every team will manage to do what Wimbledon did to us, so I'm not overly concerned about our season stalling. At home, getting the first goal will become key - and the earlier in the game we get it, the better.
I think the key will be the full backs and their crossing. When teams sit back full backs become key as they have freedom to push on, and it will allow Potts and Thiam to overload the box. We will get hit on the break playing this way but I think if we can break down teams depends on the quality of the ball in the box and the midfield picking up the flick ons.
Potts didn't play like a winger in a 442 at Rochdale, he came inside more and only went out wide when he had to, Cavare gave the width and did a lot of work. I don't know what formation system this gave us but it worked and Isgrove and hedges have no chance in getting in this team over Thiam and Potts who are powerhouses in this league.
Raketenwissenschaft. But the best idiomatic translation I think would be "das ist kein Hexenwerk" - that's not witchcraft.
Potts plays narrow on he right and Thiam likes to cut inside. The power and directness of Thiam and Potts means oppoaition players have to get tight to cut down their space. This then creates space out wide for the overlap which at the minute Cavare and (to a lesser extent) Pinnillos are taking advantage of. If we had a traditional winger on the right who hugs the touchline then Cavare would have less space and, therefore, be less effective. As such I’d be surprised if we go down the line of bringing a winger in. There will no doubt be times when the opposition stay tight and cut down the space (a bit like Wimbledon did) which we have to find a way through. The way around that is consistent delivery from wide areas which is where we need to work on. Last night was better but against Blackpool and Wimbledon it was pretty bang average.
Was in The Starr Inn before the game speaking to a Rochdale fan, he asked my thoughts and i said ‘If KH still tries to play an attacking brand of football, we would murder them and win 4/5-0. He laughed at me. Teams will begin to shut up shop soon
3 teams have come out and tried to attack us and we have won 10-0 The worry is teams will stop attacking us.
If there’s any sense in opposition managers that will be the case very soon and it’s upto Stendel and his backroom staff to figure out a way round that. I’ve got faith in him to do just that.
I think we will do better on the road as opposed to at home fans don't like their team shutting up shop at home. When your Wycombes blackpool Accrington ect come to oakwell I expect them to put everyone behind the ball and come for the point. We have to learn to break these teams down. I watched Huddersfield at man city it was like a game of attack v defence untill the goal, and then the floodgates opened.
You mean the players who went on to prove they are Good quality championship players? As opposed the current bunch who were relegated?
