That could be fun. Especially if a relegated side managed to win it, and then defeat the 6th place team. Would they still be relegated if they got knocked out of the the playoffs in the semi or lost the final? If they then won the playoffs who would go down in their place? It could be the team who finished 21st which seems a bit unfair, or even the team that finished 6th (very unfair, but a lot of added spice!) . In order to cater for such a situation, rules would have to be be drawn up well in advance. My suggestion would be, that if it were ever to occur, in orderto simplify things to just automatically relegate Sheffield Wednesday. Job done.
No. Why is it so hard for people to accept others opinion that this is a meaningless competition devalued by the greed league. The soul has been sold out of a competition that once was brilliant for the lower league clubs. I’m pleased no player got injured in the match. And I’m pleased a few lads got a run out against Oldham Reserves. Beyond that nothing. I watch friendly matches and think they are higher in the pecking order than the checkatrade trophy. Anyone that wants to go to Wembley deserves a good day out. I won’t criticise them.
Whinge, moan, niggle - typical. Quick to post when we were losing. The official attendance over 1700 with 444 Reds fans - that's a good turnout for this competition on a Tuesday night. Walton did well, which we hope he will do on Saturday as well and the new German midfielder got a run out....so not a bad night I think.
Ball-ache of a competition on the face of it, can't disagree. But you piisss with the willy you've got. And we got minutes into the legs of our fringe players who all performed admirably, playing in the same style as the first team. No injuries by the looks. A win. Positives everywhere. The next two games in the competition will feel like a task, but once it gets down to the nitty gritty and we're going to Wembley again..........
I think the competition is ridiculous. I did last time. Went to Wembley though. Hypocrite? Maybe. I couldn’t justify not taking my lad when it might have been his only chance to see the reds at Wembley. As it was we were back a few weeks later. I’ll be there again if we get there, this competition or any other. They have made this competition **** though.
I do think the addition of the premier league kids teams have severely damaged the competition but in my opinion it still represents a useful series of games with the added bonus of the chance of a Wembley trip. After the demise of reserve team football this competition gives the chance for fringe players to get some game time. Not only that, but players like Adeboyejo, Brown, Bird, Williams, Walton et al all got 90 minutes which you’d have to say would be limited without these games. One of my main gripes is that we had an U23 game on Monday which meant plenty of players who could’ve been involved weren’t able to. If it’s going to be used to give a Janice to young kids then the U23 fixtures need to be changed so they don’t clash.
Can only speak for myself but I would say well done. But it still won’t alter my opinion that the competition has been unnecessary ruined and devalued by the inclusion of kids teams and round robin games. I hope we continue to use it as an experience for our reserves, U23s and giving match fitness to those that need it. And hope that, should those players perform well enough to get through to the later stages, they are rewarded with the chance to play in the later rounds.
