Even more radical, and borderline heresy I know.... but imagine a world where public transport worked in the north and you didn't have so many cars all trying to go in the same direction on such tiny roads
Well it must have worked in some respects. Because since its been done I do alternative routes and avoid it altogether
I'll put money on it that a serious accident will happen on the M1 northbound sooner rather than later due to it. At peak times traffic backs up from aldi, around the roundabouts and all the way down the sliproad and onto a live lane of the motorway. I've nearly had cars run into the back of me a few times.
Live in the area and haved commuted on the M1 for the past 12 years, the lights on the M1 roundabout improved that area of Dodworth Rd past the crossroads but its worse from Horizon to town end roundabout, nothing much else they could do besides a multi-million pound 37a new junction.
Stairfoot roundabout coming in for some stick. Those of you old enough to remember back to the 1960s when there were traffic lights there may remember the congestion then. In my opinion it does a pretty good job - it is the meeting of five different roads - Wombwell Lane, Hunningley Lane, Doncaster Road into Barnsley, Grange Lane and Doncaster Road up to Ardsley. The bus land helps those on public transport. The signals can be a little confusing if you are not familar with it or get into the wrong lane but, other than that.....
The timing of the lights is always off at all these roundabouts. Stairfoot runs a lot better every time the lights are out
Came off M1 at birdwell today to go towards Mexborough. Offset lanes are just about ok for cars, 44 ton truck in wrong lane nearly wiped the rest of us out
Another very radical idea. If you have had a licence for over 40 years, then you have had your fair share of driving, and should give it up and use public transport and leave driving to younger people. We are addicted to our cars, and the volume of traffic is becoming unsustainable. Public transport must be the way ahead - to cut pollution. The rail network needs upgrading to carry more goods and freight around the country and get rid of so many lorries. Online shopping adds to the chaos with all the delivery vans scooting around. Electric buses, light rail systems, electric taxis, affordable dial a ride. Increase the number and safety of cycle lanes. If the rail system between Sheffield and Leeds was greatly improved - more lines, longer and modern trains then this would help.
Have you seen the cost of public transport the more people that use it the more the cost of fares will go up In may due to having an operation which meant I couldn’t drive for a month I was forced to use a bus me the missus a 3 kids was just over a tenner return same journey in the car would have cost no more than £3 if government and local councils want to cut congestion they need to capped the fares to make it worthwhile and cost effective to use
Yes - public transport needs to be affordable. I have a bus pass and Senior Railcard that helps. I think if you are a regular user there are deals and cut price tickets to be had. I won't drive to Sheffield or Leeds anymore and certainly not to London. However I sometimes use long stay car parks at airports - and day to day living without a car is not easy but it is possible - I had three months after an accident when I couldn't drive - if the public transport system were better it would be easier. I found out that walking the half or so mile to the nearest bustop was healthier and I got to chat to people I would otherwise have driven past, and maybe waved if I knew them. If the weather in this country were better I would use my push bike more.
Cundy Cross was always a nightmare and the current incarnation is at least the 4th attempt to do something with it in the last 20 years.. Birdwell and the "Disappearing" lanes are a disaster waiting to happen and yes someone is going to get hurt at the Aldi entrance/exit as you approach the M1 roundabout. As for the Dodworth road plan I honestly cannot see where it will ease traffic, it won't reduce numbers and it can't move traffic along quicker as someone already said you can't get out at the townend, the Hospital side is a nightmare and as pointed out the 400 new houses planned for the area will swamp the system even more. We should be looking at where the Dodworth road traffic is going and work on moving it there quicker not this farce of a merry go round
youngest daughter goes to the Academy Theatre opposite Aldi. I’ve seen several cars mount the pavement outside there because they are too impatient to wait for cars to turn into Aldi. The amount of young kids going in and out of there (the theatre and the nursery) seems of no importance to folks if they are in a hurry. Frightening. Same issue at Tankersley heading from Barnsley into Sheffield... two lanes down to one but obviously dispensation for Audis and BMWs to just storm up the outside and cut in when they feel like it. #dontmindthequeue
They need to put some yellow box junctions at the entrance to Grange Lane and Wombwell Lane. Roundabout gets blocked by build up from Cundy Cross and Tesco and inconsiderate knobs block off all entrances. I've been on Ardsley Hill many a time when not one car has managed to get through on green due to someone blocking the exit for town.
Wakefield Road is by far the worst road in town.. for the last 2 weeks from 9am till gone 6pm its just a car park.. the junction of smithies lane and Carlton hill is beyond a joke. it needs bypassing.. one from the wickes right upto Eastfields Arms..
