Ok. Just for shits and giggles but it's my gnawing suspicion: Press story three years from now: The consortium that bought Barnsley football club four years ago have today announced they are to rename the club the Yorkshire dragons and relocate to a 30,000 seat brand new stadium at junction 39 of the M1 on land dormant since Yorkshire cricket club withdrew new stadium plans on the site in the nineties. A spokesman explained that in the face of increasing maintenance costs and a dispute with the council over the oakwell ground, together with a slide in league position and dwindling attendances, the consortium had decided a change in direction was needed. The spokesman added the move would broaden appeal into Wakefield and beyond. He also confirmed the ground would be the new home of Wakefield rugby club and would be used as a music venue. He also confirmed plans had also been passed for a hotel and casino on the site Please tell me I'm wrong cos, although the window isn't complete, I ain't feeling the love so far
West Yorkshire Dragons??? West - why limit yourself to the west ??? Dragons - whats the relationship of dragons and Yorkshire ??? I can see where yer coming from in a lot of your post ....... except the title. Why not ......... Barnsley Football Club YORKSHIRE TYKES New manager of Huddersfield. Did you see the sign behind him. Huddersfield Town The Football Club of Yorkshire Obviously trying to buy into the Yorkshire brand. But none of them have this ....... TYKES. Only Barnsley has that brand
I'd only quoted the name as an example. Dragons cos the chairman is Chinese and it may be regarded as more appealing to a TV market in Asia. Get your point with the west Yorkshire bit, so ok Yorkshire dragons, but it won't be called Barnsley or be in barnsley that's the main point
Used to buy my kids Little Tykes play stuff when they were toddlers, they loved them. Nowt to do with Yorkshire or football though
Alternatively move to somewhere like Mexborough and merge with Rotherham and Doncaster. All play in red, all within a few miles of the ground and combined crowds of something in the region of 20 odd thousand. It would never happen though because the vast majority of fans, probably me included, would refuse to give up their own club's history and identity.
More chance of the new owners selling out within the next 12-24 months to be honest. Wouldn't be surprised if they're not already planning an escape. I think the previous owners over sold the club and they're beginning to realise the potential simply isn't there to make a reasonable return. They're business men/women, they'll move on.
Unfortunately there’s a big business park and Police Forensic Headquarters on the site Yorkshire Cricket were looking at
Wasn't it the land opposite the cedar court hotel at junction 39, if so that's still vacant, I could be wrong but I hope you get the point I'm trying to make. Be handy for you though.
