    Cos the papers say so! Shows that a general election will.be different to the local/European results.
    Hoping Farage has seriously shot himself in the foot by taking the electorate as gullible fools re his NHS dismantling

    Well done the majority of people who voted in Peterborough. My faith is restored a little actually as I though the brexit vote would be far higher.

    Increased majority last night. Outgoing MP Onasanya won by 607 whereas the new Labour MP Lisa Forbes
    won by 683 votes. Turnover was down from 68.5% at the 2017 General Election, to 48.4% last night.
    The Tories finished in third place behind the Brexit Party.

    In % terms Labour were down 17% and the Tories 23%...with the Lib Dems only up by 8%

    Labour activists on the ground were saying they had put a massive effort into door knocking the known previous voters...old fashioned hard campaigning, and it looks to have paid off, they've certainly seen off the Lib Dem challenge....on FPTP a big Lib Dem vote, (with such a narrow winning margin ) would probably have put Labour into second.
    What is also interesting though is that the Tory vote was better than expected, not good omens for a General Election, but not the 4th place they feared. I think it's possible that overconfidence on the Brexit Party side and from the Bookies and pollsters...(not who will win but by how much) may have convinced enough Tories to keep the faith and save the party from greater embarrassment.

    Not saying I disagree sb but you could also say some lib dems voted tactically for Labour.
    Either way it's a disappointing result for the Lib Dems and Greens.

    i voted leave in the referendum and brexit party in the eu elections but that is where my association with the party ends, I will vote labour in a GE and i suspect that many others will do the same,I am of the opinion that the brexit party will be just like ukip and struggle to get even one mp

    I dont actually think corbyn will be saviour many think he will be but neither do i believe all the tripe thats posted about him.

    This isn't a brexit comment but I don't see how the Brexit Party can expect people to trust them in a parliamentary election if they won't publish a manifesto.
    As for Corbyn, I don't like him, but I'd prefer to give him a try than more Tory indifference to the man in the street.

    I think it's unlikely that Labour benefited greatly ( in pure numbers) from a Lib Dem tactical vote, they only had a tiny vote at the last GE and almost doubled it at this by election...having said that the margin was so tight you can't discount it from tipping the balance.
    It probably though shows that early conclusions from the Euro elections may have overstated the rise of the Lib Dem and Greens, and that despite it being bad for the Tories...in General Election terms the two party state is not quite as dead as some commentators were suggesting.

    you and me both churton and i suspect many other,

    I do think the brexit party will publish a manifesto because unless brexit goes their way they will have little option but to do so, i also think it will give assurances about the NHS (for obvious reasons) however there is deep seated resentment against farage for comments he made several years ago and imo the current status quo is probably as far as farage's domestic political career will get, the NHS will be the focal point of the next general election.

    I wouldn't class Labour votes as votes to remain, very much a mixed bag so based on that leave looks in good form still.

    I think you may be one of the first Leave/Brexit Party voters I've come across who's said anything remotely like this. Respect for that.

    That’s a reasonable view, I hope many many more follow suit, I expect however brexit to push the main parties hard, UKIP finished second in quite a lot of constituencies at previous general elections if I remember correctly.
