We should just ‘mirror’ the costs... charge the away fans at Oakwell what we’re charged for away games. Let it be known that’s what we’re doing and why... Then, hopefully the fans of these clubs will complain too!
Was gonna go but I’ve decided against it. I go to Bulgaria 9 days after, that £36/40 will pay for me and our lasses drinks in the airport and on the plane. Hopefully they’ll be some streams flying about
This is what the club used to do in the 80s/ 90s. We charged them what they charged us. Not sure we're allowed to do that now.
Another reason I have never liked going to Hillsborough is the shocking parking arrangements. Unless you get into the area really early, invariably you can end up having to park a good 15-20 minutes walk away from the ground. It's also all very haphazard as well. When we got back to our car, it was blocked in by two others.
This was on Twitter a couple of days back (Price of Football) showing SWFC average wage from data they release. It may reduce this coming year with some of the players they have released. Some others to compare with in the thread. I fully agree with sentiment of the OP in respect of what the Premier League clubs have done with the away ticket price cap, however its easy for the clubs to absorb it, especially when something like two-thirds of them would still turn a profit with no supporters, home or away, attending any matches due to the level of TV revenue. Its a paradox that's killing football, where clubs in the second tier, and some in the third, are paying players astronomical wages and charging supporters a proportionately astronomical fee to watch. As a club, I think Barnsley are between a rock and a hard place. Ultimately, as supporters, we have to make decisions based on what we can afford. It's not perfect, but I think the home pricing is reasonable but I know myself that I won't go to anywhere near as many away games as I did last season simply due to the cost. And it's that where football needs to take a long hard look at itself, but ultimately we know it will dance to the tune of media money.
We could get us own back and put the away fans in the west stand and charge £40. You never know the Leeds, Millwall and Birmingham lot might even save us the money on demolition.
True but in fairness to the Wednesday fans mocking us they will fill our away end when we charge them the same.
Very balanced post, good to read. My personal opinion is it would be fantastic if we came out in solidarity and boycotted the game. But we can't. The main reason we can't is that a month later we'll be charging a similar price for the Leeds game at home. We can't criticise the pricing structure of a rival club when ours is equally excessive, without being branded hypocrites and losing all credibility. It needs a united approach between club and fans. If, when the match day prices were released yesterday, we made a big deal of charging £20 for the Leeds game, rewarding loyal fans with a reasonably priced ticket for a big game, refusing to join the tit for tat exploitation of fans, highlighting just how ludicrous the pricing structure at some clubs is, then an announcement from our supporters club that they were urging Barnsley fans to boycott the Wednesday game due to the price of tickets would have made headline news. It would have had bite and the united stance between club and fans would have meant something and maybe started something rolling. If we boycott a game when we charge similar prices we'll be dismissed as cranks who need to get their own house in order before criticising others. The fact that we have only announced one game so far at such ludicrous prices makes no odds, the clear reality is we do it, therefore our complaints about other clubs will not be heard.
I fully agree with this and would suggest sending it to someone at the club, if you think it would be worthwhile.
When we play Leeds and Wednesday at home we have people paying on the day in the home ends and huge away followings. I'm sure who ever sets the pricing will feel justified in setting them hight when people pay it.
I agree with you Jay about us charging other clubs the same and that’s why we should try to unite with other clubs and back each other. If we contact Leeds supporters who obviously are going to be charged £36 and back them should they wish to do the same by not attending Oakwell, this would be us not being hypocritical. It’s not a fight against football fans. It’s a fight where football fans need to unite and help each other out. What we are doing is just as bad as Leeds and Wednesday (should it be £36) and the only people it hits hard are the football fans. Barnsley and Leeds are playing tit for tat on this. This isn’t an attack at Barnsley either as I Love the club and what they are doing behind the scenes is fantastic. The Accrington chairman has openly said that he won’t charge football fans silly prices no matter who they are as he’s a fan himself. This is the motto other clubs including ours needs to take as without us, football is dead.
The club could subsidise the fans and just charge us £25 a ticket, and use the extra wedge they are getting from the cat A games at oakwell, then that justifies having cat A games to some extent. If they don’t they’re just as guilty as Wednesday and Leeds at exploiting fans.
Go and give clubs license to keep ripping us off. Don't go and at least try to do something about it. If we feel hypocritical because our club is charging the same for one game......boycott that one too. What's the limit here that people are willing to accept? £50 a ticket? £75? £100? All to enable young men doing a non essential job to take 10 grand a week out of our pockets. I'm well aware of the fact that I don't go to the vast majority of games but I'm pretty sure this would be my stance if I were. Football fans are probably the most apathetic consumer group I can think of who have allowed themselves to be taken advantage of by the sport for decades now. It's about time something was done.
Even if TV money and corporate hospitality and sponsorship put double what the total revenue for clubs is currently, without fans filling grounds and providing the atmosphere football would die. We have seen matches played behind closed doors and as a spectacle it is none existent with shouts from players and coaches echoing around the empty stadium. Football fans are the lifeblood of the whole structure. I am aware that as someone who cannot attend games and relies on iFollow, I have no real mandate to dictate to fans who go to matches home and away week in week out but I believe for the sake of the game it is about time a clear signal was sent to the FL and those team owners who believe it is reasonable to charge obscene admission prices that freeze the fan base in many places out of the game. Enough is enough!! Barnsley FC are not immune and the current owners should be approached by its own fans to abandon any tit-for-tat pricing. Combining that with boycotting rip off clubs like SWFC and LUFC not just once nor by just one club but by all fans until such time as they realise it is hitting them financially.
