Yes, my understanding was that the transaction fee was several multiples of that amount - reflecting the balance sheet position you have accurately described.

However, I accept that we can never truly prove that either way as like many of the transactions enacted by Mr Cryne relating to the football club, he chose not to make the details public (as was his right).

And in my opinion that is why we can neither fully denigrate him, nor can you credibly cast him as some sort of selfless philanthrope as your post seeks to do. But equally, nor can you undermine the current board as having somehow taken advantage of Mr Cryne’s selfless generosity.

You ask what I think the current board’s motives are? I know, because they have been ultra transparent. Their aim is to make money by capital appreciation of the football club. They want to grow the value of the club through success both on the field and in the commercials. They’ve been absolutely clear and transparent in that.

I just think you’ve based your appraisal of everything that has happened on Mr Cryne effectively gifting a loaded B/S to the current incumbent for significantly less than its commercial value. And I don’t think you or I know that that’s what actually happened.

My intention was never to paint Mr Cryne as "some sort of selfless philanthrope". My post was intended to reset the scales of judgement from the picture that you painted. I hope that there is no doubt in your mind that Mr Cryne was the only person willing and capable of saving the club when it fell into the hands of the Administrator. I hope that you see that the club was in a better state financially and organisationally when he passed on ownership of the club, and that that improvement had cost him personally. As you say, we do not know for sure what he was paid for the club. I have suggested one figure, you believe it was considerably higher, but as you point out, we do not know for certain. In that event, why not be generous. Why not think well of Mr Cryne because of his original intentions. Why have all of these doubts about him and his motives based upon nothing but heresay and suspicion. I am happy with my position.

As for our new owners. As you say, they are here to try to improve the value of the football club, but how can they cash in on that improvement in value. They are essentially investors, and what investors do is see potential in an investment, improve the value of that investment and then realise that value and move on to the next project. That is what they did at Nice, and that is what they will try to do at Barnsley. Their only interest in my football club is as investors, and how could I expect anything else of individuals from across the world with a common interest only of enriching themselves. If we compare the motives for ownership, if we compare the subsequent investments of cash following acqusition of the club as a means of fuelling growth plans, then I would be more encouraged by Mr Cryne's early years in charge than I am theirs. Now they may be better at running things. They may understand the football business better than Mr Cryne. I do not know, but we are judging Mr Cryne after the end of his term in control, whilst we are judging the new owners at the very start of theirs. We have the full perspective in respect of Mr Cryne, whilst we have only a start for the new owners. In Mr Cryne's case, he left us with a very much healthier Balance Sheet, but a team on its way down to where it began when he took over. Overall, in my opinion, he deserves credit for his time in charge. Our current owners will eventually cash in and only then will we be able to make the same judgement of their time in charge.

RR, great posts, lots of knowledge.
    Never read your pieces before.
Cannot disagree with any of your thoughts.
Just hope we see the aspirational signings arrive to give us more chance.
