I could be wrong, but I think times have changed in the two decades. Back then you could get a decent player with a few miles left in the tank without breaking the bank. Players these days have made so much money there is no incentive to drop down a league or two.
I don't think they'd panic - but nor is it part of the plan, I think they'd find it frustrating and would even possibly lead to a change of direction. They want success and if the current system is seen to be failing they could even pull out - there's no panic, but there's a plan they expect to succeed.

Just making the point. I’m fully aware it’s not the 80’s, and anyway, is it the case that every club has the same policy as we do or have they not realised it’s not the 80’s either? For what it’s worth, to me the club is simply being managed on a risk/reward basis (in other words, like a business). Longer contracts for young players loads whatever risk there is onto the football club. Where the rewards end up (if any) remains to be seen. Trading during the summer appears to have generated a healthy surplus. Hopefully, it will also bring a degree of success on the pitch and/or secure the club’s long-term future. Hopefully...
