If it's alcohol free craft beer, they use loads more hops to mask the lack of alcohol. If it's mass-produced crap, you've been stung!

It's a more expensive process, as first you make beer, then you have to spend time taking out the alcohol (which is usually done by keeping it at a temperature that lets the alcohol evaporate, but leaves the rest in as well as possible).

In that same direction: Punk AF is pretty decent too. Erdinger is normally my go-to for alcohol free beer. Not a fan of alcohol free lagers. The stronger taste of the other ones hide the lack of alcohol better than a lager can.

How much is the duty they’re not paying though. 10%?

I'm as mystified as you mate, pubs whinge they are killed by the duty then charge more for alcohol free beer which can't attract the same rate of duty. I try and do a couple of months a year off the sauce and it really annoys me

Just to clarify a couple of things on this one.

The best alcohol free beers aren't de-alcoholised. Meaning they're brewed to their abv, rather than brewed to the original abv before having the alcohol taken away. You can achieve this by using a 'Lazy Yeast' which converts the sugars much slower meaning you can package at 0.5%. Ones worth trying, including those already mentioned, are Thornbridge Big Easy, BrewDog Punk AF, BrewDog Nanny State, Adnams Ghost Ship, Big Drop Milk Stout, Big Drop Pale, Big Drop Sour, Erdinger Weisse, Stiegl 0% and then lower abv beers from a little producer called Small Beer that produce a range under 2.8%.

What the breweries save on duty they invest in to the process and the ingredients. That's not the case for Heineken 0%, however if you had it on draught then you're paying for the system they use to pour it. Nobody wants kegs with 50 plus pints in so they have a system called 'Blade' which is 14 pint containers.

The Germans create the best 0% beers in general but we're catching up big time. Erdinger sponsor marathons in Germany with their Weisse beer as the Isotones are great for the body - so you get handed one as you cross the finishing line.

Ghost Ship is the best one I've tried. Very close to the real thing.
