Rugby League player Rob Burrow diagnosed with MND. Only 37. Gutted for him. You never know what around the corner
It's awful news, another powerhouse and athlete afflicted by it. Fernando Ricksen recently passed away, and another Rugby great - Joost Van Der Westhuizen - succumbed not too long ago. A lot of mixed emotions when you know what is going to happen, but also a lot of inspiration, such as with Doddie Weir at SPOTY the other night. There's a tremendous amount of research going on into Neurodegenerative diseases among sportsmen, as well as the general population, I hope they uncover a cure for this terrible disease.
Yes never nice to see a grow man breakdown, feel for his family. Getting old is a privilege denied to so many.
Dreadful news it’s a truly terrible disease and currently there is very little that can be done for sufferers. Heart goes out to him and his family.
Once saw him when i went to see yorkshire at headingley. The league player's must have been training and as i walked past them he stopped me and started talking about how we where going on, a true gentleman and so tragic
Terrible news for Rob and his family. I've lost 2 friends in the last 18 months to this horrible disease and it's heart breaking to see their suffering. It goes without saying that we need to spend much more on finding a cure for all diseases. Good luck in your fight Rob!

Met Rob after a Rhinos game a few years ago with my lad. Absolute superstar, couldn't get over how small he was though, but built like a tank. My boy was in awe of him tbh. Great bloke
Lovely chap. Had the pleasure of interviewing him a few times near the beginning of his career when I worked on the Leeds Student paper. Always one of the friendliest players to chat to. Also watched him play hundreds of times as a Rhinos fan. Always struck everyone how amazing it was for someone 5’4” to be competing with enormous blokes every week. Not just competing, but excelling. Wish him all the best.
a close friend of mine died from it. He was around 2 years from diagnosis. Can be much quicker. It’s a terrible disease where parts of your body shut down one by one
Christ. How did Stephen Hawking last so long with it then? It is truly awful. Did it shut down down your mates respiratory system or was he severely incapacitated like Stephen Hawking before he died?
respiratory system was last to go so you end up paralysed. Think Stephen Hawkins was something slightly different. Was slow progressing so it happened of years rather than months
I googled Stephen Hawking and he had a 'Rare early onset slow-progressing MND.' MND doesn't affect mental capacity - and as andytyke says it is respiratory system that is the last to be affected. It's a fkn vile illness - no other way of putting it!
A fund set up for Rob Burrow has realised > £100,000 in just 24 hours. I used to work part time in the Wakefield Youth Service. One of my Senior workers ran a female over because he couldn't depress the brake on his car in time to avoid her, he then turned up late for a session claiming he had forgotten his way to the Club and finally he started to slur his words to the point you would have thought he had been drinking. Sadly he was diagnosed with MND and after a very courageous two year fight ,sadly passed away aged fifty two. A truly horrible condition. Hope they are able to find a cure for it in the not too distant future.
