Personally? I'd rather have 9 and then a modified or shortened season next year if needed.

Is the builder only allowed to employ new employees for Mrs Wilson a house? Seems a bit odd that my rival builder is allowed to employ my workers but I am not allowed to employ any.

You're going to have a giant headache around players out of contract. They won't be able to force players to extend. The product can't be the same as it was prior to the lockdown. Unless the player's current team accept terms already agreed in principle from 1st July with new club until this season ends.

As a side note I found it interesting that the English lawn tennis association took out pandemic insurance. They are covered to the tune of 114 million.

If they cancel the season there’ll be plenty of clubs and players seeking legal advice over lost transfer/contract clauses that are based on x amount of appearances, promotion, etc.

Isn’t the season after next (2021/22) due to have a big mid season break for the World Cup in Qatar? If so, why does the 2020/21 season have to be finished in time for the Euros?

i don’t think anyone’s committing to one that doesn’t exist though

cancel this one, work out what you want to do ref promotion and relegation

and then start the next one whenever, no commitment to a date however.

It’s all hot air anyway SKY and BT will decide how much money they want and then the FA and EFL will panic.

Can’t see a builder paying three year (championship ) contracts to finish one house and possibly have to keep paying them (championship ) money to build (first div ) houses.
I’m only using your building analogy obvious it can’t be in same context imo .
The season can only be fair if it’s played out which i agree . But not at any price in extreme situations. and I don’t believe in the we’re at the bottom so we should end season and go down without finishing .
There’s no fair way of doing this especially if we have chance (and I’m not sure at this stage )to start a full new season on time whichever way this is resolved someone gonna complain .

Earliest day for training to restart is 16th May. Preseason is normally 3-4 weeks, then 8 weeks for games. That takes the season out to mid August *at the earliest* if the restart is not delayed any more.

The Preliminary leg of the Champions/Europa Leagues are scheduled for w/c 9th June. The group stages are drawn 27th August. UEFA would need notification of the English teams for that competition (and every other country) before the second date...

The Champions League then feeds into the World Club Championship the season after. So it isn't just English football, but the entirety of UEFA and world club football that needs adjusting - and even if the virus miraculously leaves the UK today, there is still most of Europe in lockdown.

The Champions League and Europa league are arguably more important to UEFA than Euros 2020/1. Certainly financially. Any delays to the end of the domestic season leads into delays with the start of the next continental season which causes even more financial problems.

So by the time they get back to training they will have had more time off than they do post season. Teams usually go back six weeks before the start of the proper stuff so you can't expect different this time. If it goes past June you can't expect guys out of contract to hang around or be forced to stick around when they aren't legally contracted to. You can't be wasting medical staff and equipment at a football match if the situation is bad enough that it's more important they are somewhere else instead of in a near empty stadium.

I am sure the players will tow the company line saying they are glad to be back playing, happy to give the fans something to watch blah blah blah, whilst if they are honest they will not want to be playing and their heart won't be in it. Players and staff can be put at risk but fans can't? Are we not all in this together? Football is for the fans and shouldn't be brought back until they are allowed to attend.

Even if it’s social distancing I can’t see them playing behind closed doors . They stopped it first time because people were congregating illegally or in advisedly. The only way I can see sport or any spectator activities commencing is after fully all clear imo.

UEFA need to lead, what's the point of completing the season if UEFA say it's voided and those who've qualified for Europe actually haven't. Can't see leagues in Spain,.France or Italy completing any time soon.

Sadly football hasn't been for the supporters in the grounds for some time.

I'm glad it's a season when we rock bottom and look nailed on for relegation, because I'm honestly not that fussed what happens with the season. If it had been last season however.........

Exactly this. UEFA will set the precedent across Europe, then the EPL will have to fall in line from Champions/Europa League places, then once the EPL have sorted their end out, the EFL will be able to act.

That letter from the EFL is just bluster at this point with entirely arbitrary dates in there. They also need to start working out what they are going to do with next season too. It’s alright getting this complete but if it means we miss next season, there’s no way most clubs will survive. They’ll have no income but all the fixed costs still there.

In one thread people are pleading for the army to come and clear the streets and in another discussing the football season resuming in May.

    Hatstand

Not sure about the football league but in the Premier League only 30% of players are legible to play for England. As well as eradicating the virus in the UK the EFL clearly have the ambition to eradicate it worldwide and reinstate international travel by 16th May. Meanwhile, on planet earth, the deaths per day in the UK are still rising, while worldwide, the figures of infection we're seeing right now are a tiny drop in the ocean compared to what we'll see in six weeks time.

I've never before read anything so removed from reality as that statement from the EFL.

They’ve also completely ignored that a load of players will be stuck in their home countries now eg Mads Anderson. Good luck convincing Denmark etc that they need to let him fly to the Uk because Barnsley need to play QPR.

I think the EFL are completely right to have plans in place like behind closed doors, 56 days etc. But completely bonkers to even waste time putting a date on it. Letter should have just said here's what we plan to do but when that will happen depends entirely on the situation.

AndyHolt says he needs to know what happens to next season, so Accrington can budget. Says clubs will go under without the security of knowing. He thinks this season needs to be binned to secure his clubs future.
