On Good Friday 1887, Barnsley rugby club went ahead with a match against the wishes of the curate of St. Peter’s church, the Reverend Tiverton Preedy. Disgusted, he disassociated himself from that outfit and decided to “start an Association Club such as the rugbyites will not crush out.” A momentous day in our history. We should all give thanks. And it’s only slightly ironic that we’ve played many a match on Good Friday.
Ive often thought that was the timing but not so. Preedy didnt arrive in Barnsley until the Summer of 87 so it was the Rugby Clubs fixture list for 1887-8 that he objected to.
Times change and if he'd been alive no doubt God have changed with them They did use a pub to get changed in after all!
