One of the most talented footballers the world has even seen unfortunately his character flaws prevented me from seeing him as a great alongside the likes of Pele and Cryuff
Another childhood hero gone. We didn't have any big football stars in Finland until Jari Litmanen, so Diego Maradona was always the greatest one for me as a kid. Even today I still like to see Argentina do well, thanks to Diego I suppose. He broke my heart in the World Cup '94, but at that point Litmanen was about to be crowned the new king anyway. Maradona may have been a bit of a madman and a drug addict, but his story is really quite a tragic one. Oh, and what a player he was...
As insane as he was talented, a god awful human being, a cheat, a drug addled gobshite. I will not mourn the corrupt little *****.
By a country mile the finest player through my childhood years of the 80s. A brilliant player with a nasty, streetwise, streak in him. I'll paraphrase Barry Davies - "You have to say he was magnificent." RIP Diego.
Greatest player that ever lived. There’s not been another player like him that could win a game single-handedly, by fair means or foul. RIP to the cheating get.
An iconic figure of the beautiful game, a name that will forever be remembered. To lead an average Argentina side to World Cup glory, then repeat that kind of success with Napoli, he had to be special. People will refer to his cheating (on and off the pitch) and his drug issues etc. But what a fūcking footballer.
His autobiography is brilliant. Blames pretty much everyone else for his mistakes. Very entertaining read.
Who would I rather remember, Maradona a cheating drug taker or George Best, an alcoholic womaniser who died 15 years ago today?? Both fantastic players but bell ends.
