I've been reading various views on this over the past week or so. When I think of the long ball merchants of yesterday I think of the 80s 90s crazy gang. Beasant or the defenders long punt up to Fash or Sanchez. Or Bassetts early 90s Sheff Utd. More recently to an extent some of Pulis or Allardyce sides who set up organised but dependant on who they manage can be direct. Which begs the questions. Is VI football as attractive to watch as DS or GS sides ........? Imho NO. Does his side get more results (up to now in the Championship)? Well yes. In my opinion we are far from 'hoofball' merchants. More direct definitely. It's not like we've got the aforementioned 'big lads' up front to play to. You could in some instances accuse Leicester of been longballers as they constantly look for that ball behind the back 4 to utilise Vardys pace which works. I can see our current style changing slightly if VI has targeted players who may join in Jan and indeed leave. We'll see I suppose. In the meantime I'm very happy with pointshall and current placing. Liverpool in the era of Hansen, Lawrenson and Rush played lots of long balls. We don’t just play a pointless boot forward, we don’t have the players for that. Who cares what other fans say anyway? As long as they’re looking for excuses as to why we beat them I love it.
The one thing that concerned me yesterday, was our second half kick off straight into touch. The deliberate nature of it was a bit alarming. Not a tactic I like to see us use.
Matt Moore on Twitter: “Reading a report in Huddersfield newspaper about our kick offs yesterday. They say it was a very smart idea as Huddersfield have a tendency to overplay in defence and concede set pieces due to being penned in. They're one of the worst in the league for defending set pieces”
I quite liked that tactic, put the opposition on the back foot, put in the press and try and sneak a foul or get the ball from the throw in. It was obviously the plan against them. Mix it up and keep them guessing, I like it and it shows the management team have done their homework on the opposition.
Much rather see us play how we are than fanny about with the ball at the back and concede goals through mistakes. it was glaringly obvious we werent confortable doing it yet both our previous managers were too stuborn to drop the tactic
Whilst a lot of folk reckon we just hoof it up field sounding like the opposition play some other way, many of our recent opponents have done similar. The rugby style kick off puts them immediately under pressure in the corner if we hit touch in the reight area.
Yep I agree, not keen on this at all. I love my team to get the ball down and play football. Most of my time watching that’s what Barnsley have done. Maybe that’s why we produce and get to see cultured defenders. I don’t think we play hoof ball at present. Even yesterday there was plenty of skill to admire. Fast feet from Styles, nice link up play from Woodrow and I thought Mads looked a very good ball carrying defender , he got my MOTM. Have to say it’s very pleasant watching us win, playoff’s do you know it might just be on. COYR
Under Danny Wilson in the promotion season, whenever we kicked off, Redders fired it towards Wilko on the touch line towards the opposition’s third. Sometimes he’d win a header, sometimes it would go out, most of the time we lost possession. But it often got us into their half. If anything, yesterday’s tactic is even more effective as we are definitely in their half. And as I’ve stated elsewhere, it’s a known issue for Huddersfield. They’ve coughed up possession from their own throws more than any other club. Great tactic.
Liverpool play a lot of long balls I've noticed - doesn't harm switching play up a bit. One of our fans on Fb said we played a lot of long hoof balls under Bassett in 99/00 - not my recollection of that season. Long balls would have by passed Higgy - most of our play came through him
