Looking at it purely from the financial side is it worth gambling what relegation would cost us for £2m? Don’t forget what happened to Hull last season
He's under contract to us and we have the prerogative to require him to play. I don't imagine that we had to be too argumentative about this and that he wouldn't have needed persuading to play, knowing his commitment to the club and the cause. I would think it in Mowatt's best interest to wait and see if he gets a really good contract offer from another club, bearing in mind that this would secure the next three/four years of his career, which would be the most crucial and the one in which he might think to try to get the best deal he can. That's just the way that football works, but I would reckon that, if no significantly better offer is forthcoming in this window, he will be signing another contract extension with us and we would be pleased to keep him. What is running in our favour is that club's are saving precious finances in the present circumstances, so this may limit the number of clubs who could make a better offer, as well as limiting the sort of salary available. I hope that he signs an extension, even if only for a further year (or two). Become a legend and part of the great achievements of the past couple of years, especially as captain.
You aren't going to get two million for someone who may play just 23 more league games for us at best.
We got £3 million for Hourihane. It's supply and demand. If a team thinks they need him to guarantee promotion or have a dart at Play-offs like Villa did then he'll be gone.
