Why don't you get an assist for winning a penalty?

Only recently noticed on BBC Sport when they credit assists. Same could be argued for winning a free kick and your teammate scores direct.

Surely they warrant an accredited assist as you'd get for a 5 yard side pass in front of goal.

    I'm starting a campaign.........

    'High five for a dive'
'Give a howl for a foul'
'One on the card from 12 yards'

It's gaining momentum already (in my head).

Probably not the reason, but in my opinion you should only be credited with an assist if you intended the pass/cross/header that led to the goal(no flukey rebounds, etc). Seeing as you can't "mean" to win a penalty(otherwise, it would be a dive), then I don't think you should be credited with said assist should you be fouled for a penalty...

No, they shouldn’t get an assist, but some should receive marks out of 6 for artistic merit!

I hate the term "winning a penalty". It intimates cheating. Players should be in the box thinking what they're about to do with the ball not enticing a foul.

Clean thro on goal and someone takes you out or trips you from behind or ball is going in and a defender saves it. They've denied you a goal scoring opportunity thro no fault of your own. Earned a penalty ............

Should the assist go to the player that commits the foul , he has definitely caused the penalty .

He's stopped the possibility of a goal.

Suppose that's answers the OP question, it's not a assist because he probably took a dive.

I remember Ashley Young getting two assists for Man U when all he did was touch the ball with his studs before someone else belted it into the the top corner (Twice). Lost me a Fantasy League game that so was really annoyed.

You can ‘win’ a penalty by going down when caught by the opposition.
There’s a difference between not trying to stay up and diving.
Can also recall Michael Owen talking about how players are encouraged by coaching teams to not stay on their on feet if caught to win a penalty. So if they are being encouraged, that would qualify as taught which brings you back to winning a penalty.

Not something I personally am a fan of but it comes back to if someone catches you do you try to stay on your feet and lose an easier goal scoring opportunity or go down.

    No.
    No.
No no no no no no no no no. :)

Penalties are awarded. They are not earned or won. Think of it as compensation. You don't earn a compensation payment, you are awarded or given one.

According to several on here, pens should not be counted in player's goal tally...:)

I think they should have two goal tallies. The golden boot should be awarded for goals from open play and free-kicks. Penalties should be separate. My reasoning...why aren't penalty shoot-out goals included?

Because they aren't part of the game. They are an add on to find a winner for knockout competitions. If there was another/better way they'd use it

I nearly put that in my reply, because that's what they used to do for European cup ties in the 60s
