There are quite a few, but one of the big ones is you can’t get a good pork pie. Anywhere, ever. They don’t understand what a proper pork pie is. The very best southern pork pie would get chucked in a bin in tarn.

    I miss pork pies.

Awful, innit? Rotten Melton Mowbray pies pass as ‘artisan’ down here.

Percy Turners needs to sell on Amazon Prime.

I'd say its the fish and chips. I only have them about 3 or 4 times a year but they just don't get close to northern ones (though i wonder if general changes of cooking oils is a big factor). Though the best ones I've had were in Whitstable.

The worst sh*ts I've had were in Whitstable. Bloody southern oysters!

from my time in London I noticed a shorty supply of good fish and chips. and also a curious absence of Chinese takeaways that were also chippies.

and i miss going into a chippy/chinese and being able to see into the owners living room if they left the door open. I don't imagine those type of places exist anymore.

other things that didn't translate or make it south were...Parkin, Vimto (i know its everywhere but always felt like a northern drink to me), a bag of bits from the chippy, treacle toffee, mischief night, seabrook crisps.

Waitrose dele counter do a good pie. Agree about fish and chips, hard to find a good one, but I remember some bad ones in Wombwell along with some brilliant ones.

i used to have regular reunions with a few fellow army "vets" before this madness, we used to meet up in each others areas all over the country and it was my job to supply the pork pies for 4 of us that were old drinking mates ( sadly 3 now) and we've come to the conclusion that to make a good/great growler you need an old fashioned name.......... I regularly get parkin sent down (in batches usually!). I usually give some (just a few crumbs) to a friend/neighbour as they havent a clue what it is. As for Seabrook crisps: see Asda! They have a wide variety in mine. Agree about scraps from the chippy too

First year in ages that I've not made parkin for bonfire night. Daughter got some whoopsed for 5p in Newcastle Morrisons though and her housemates were converted.

“Tell you what love, I could just do a proper pork pie.”

“Well go and get one then.”

7 hours later after a round trip of 350 miles and £40 worth of petrol I’d be back.

    Reight.
