I disagree. In my earlier quote I have listed 14 towards/attacking midfielders who have all been here from around 4 years ago onwards who have all failed to produce.
I assumed we might ne re-signing him. I don't see whole threads. Apologies. It just tweaked my curiosity because you aren't usually bad when it comes to incoming transfers. Put 2 and 2 together and got 5 hence the question. I'll be less nosey in future. That plus I wasted time googling Hedges again for nothing.
given our financial disadvantage we are always going to have to take gambles on players some will work some won’t. Alex Ferguson said his his biography that he only expected 25% of signings to be unqualified successes even given the financial advantages he had.
The problem we have with bringing forwards in is that anyone under 23 that has any chance of being any good at this level is going to cost millions and be picked up by one of the top 6, or more specifically, Brentford. So the chances of bringing players in that are better than what we have are pretty slim. We need to invest some time in the young forwards we already have and look to keep some of them for long enough to see some benefit. Been reported that we're taking the option to extend Victor's contract for another year, and would be good to invest some time in Marsh and Bramall as the players looking to breakthrough with a number of others who are probably earning far too much for their role in the squad (Thomas, Schmidt, Frieser) making their way to the exits. Maybe keep the spreadsheet for defenders, but focus on the academy for forwards. If we want a striker for the rest of this season, look for a loan from a Prem team.
I’d imagine every club and particularly the elite ones focus on finding and developing forwards as apart from the Obvious goals benefit it’s the goal scorers that can be sold for big bucks, generally. we’ve produced and developed a number of defenders recently who even at the real top level (Stones, Holgate are the 2 I’m thinking of) don’t demand the same transfer fees as a top striker. Last top striker I can think of that came through the ranks was David Hirst? Can’t think of anyone else from our academy.
I think we have to trust the recruitment on how good this lad is. If we bought on what his stats looked like alone, we wouldn't have signed the likes of Brittain. I think the recruitment strategy in the last couple of windows has been decent. Results don't lie. We'd be languishing in the bottom 3 again if recruitment had been a disaster.
