It was about tomorrow’s match. We were winning 1-0 with an early goal and everyone is smiling. But then we conceded two midway through the second half and the mood turned ugly. Time is running out and the inevitable exodus has started of those not wanting to stay to witness another dismal home defeat. I’m sticking with it though. Maybe, just maybe…. It’s well into 90+minutes when the inexplicable happens. A wasted cross from the wing goes straight to their keeper near his goal line. We expect him to roll on the ground, as they all do. But he turns and smiles at those left in the Ponty End and simply drops the ball into the net! The whistle blows, we’ve got a point and then a roar starts to go up as a few thousand look at the scores on their phones. The others have lost. We have held on to fifth place….
I hope your dream stays where it belongs in your mind.. if we do get into the play offs I'm sure most would be looking for a little bit more encouragement than another home defeat..
I'm reminded of our first near miss for the playoffs. May 1991, last game at home and we had to win 4-0 or have a better result than Middlesborough. We won 1-0 and Boro were losing(?)... Until word came through that they'd scored in injury time to deny us 7th place while the fans were celebrating on the pitch. We missed out on goal difference that season and Notts County were promoted to Division 1 through the play-offs.
From memory, I think we were playing Middlesbrough and it was Brighton who scored late on. Keith Borrett had already announced that we were in the playoffs!!
The night before the playoff final last year I woke in the night for a pee and couldn't get back to sleep because of an owl hooting in the tree across the road. Filled me with dread.
Yes one of the few times I’ve sat in the West Stand , players quickly ushered back down the stairs from the Directors box , Boro fans going mental
Us winning one nil and everybody smiling could only ever happen in a dream. We've got some reight misery guts that follow t'super reds ............sithi.
I stand corrected. I left the ground in a huff to travel to Scarborough and visit my then on-off girlfriend and we ended up having a big argument and not speaking for a another month or so.
My weird dream last night was my Project Manager on a conf call telling us 28 different recipes for Pina Colada.
Take a bow Keith Borrett. All the ground knew we'd missed out and Keith was announcing what time tickets went on sale the price and who we were playing. If the BBS had have been up and kicking then the melt down would have been worth paying to see.
Cue a pitch invasion and then people wondering why the players were throwing their boots into the crowd.
Well I dreamt about the game last night and it was 0-0 at half time despite it being all us for 45 minutes. I was in the executive suite and I went to the toilet at 74 minutes, heard the crowd erupt and came back out to see all the players round Jalo who had scored. We were under the cosh then until 97th minute when the full time whistle went.
Well, we got the draw but 1-1 not 2-2. We got 6th place not 5th. The mood didn’t turn ugly, just a bit apathetic.
