I know it’s just a football chant, but having walked up Fargate and onto the Moor in Sheffield yesterday, Barnsley is so much nicer than Sheffield. Fargate in particular is a complete mess. Empty shops, litter everywhere, people hassling you every 20 yards. It’s just grim.
Depends which parts of Barnsley and Sheffield get compared. The triangle of Hoylandswaine, Silkstone and Cawthorne is lovely. As is where Joe Root lives Dore in Sheffield.
I went to Barrow vs. Carlisle yesterday. I hate that chant, whichever set of supporters sing it, but never would it be more apt than if we played Barrow away. Possibly and probably the most deprived area I’ve ever been for a football match - but then one of the best drives you could hope for to get there.
Sheffield City Centre is an ugly place, but, some of the suburbs of Sheffield are beautiful to be fair.
Agree on both, used to go up to Barrow with the skip lorry a lot about ten years ago now. Barrows ground is just on the left as you hit the town.. Are those big grey slag heaps still there.?
I’m going to say everything is still there. Grey slag heaps, huge buildings that looked residential with smashed windows everywhere, 40% of businesses boarded up, and an interesting fan base. Pulled in to a multi-story right next to the town centre, went up three floors to the top, no cars, drove across a couple of zones, no cars, went back down a couple of floors, and still no cars. Plenty of youths eyeing us up though knowing we were blatantly tourists. Don’t like being critical but it was pretty grim and sad to see. Great game though.
Luton is world’s apart. Fairly modern train station these days, lots of footfall, businesses open, couple of decent pubs pre-game, fairly normal supporters.
Sounds even worse than I remembered. Definitely the land that time forgot. But as you say.. wonderful drive to get there.
It's a ridiculous song, whoever is singing it. But it also draws a wry smile in its ridiculousness. Barnsley fans singing it at Bristol where I live: wry smile. Any team singing at Barnsley where I'm from: wry smile. Every place has its beauty and its rough spots. That's Britain innit. It's a daft song, but it's one I can't take seriously.
I mean, for the most part Barnsley is a shithole, but so is Sheffield. If they genuinely think the two places are that vastly different then they’re more deluded than I thought.
Many years ago Sheffield had the best thing in Yorkshire - possibly the world. That Hole in the Road near the bus station that was lined with giant fish tanks that had massive fish in them.
If what you say is true then please accept my apologies, because I was the contracts manager for the civil engineering contractor that filled it in and built the roadworks above.
depends where you go. Barnsley has nothing like Kelham, Crookes, Abbeydale, Nether Edge, Devonshire Quarter
What’s good about Crookes? I worked up there for a good few years and never saw anything to do think it was a nice place, it’s no different to Darton or Mapp
