Annoying isn't it that we are restricted to pre-new away end crowds. Twenty years ago, with the small open Kop, we could never get more than 18,000 something for the big games. Then we spent money on that new stand, increasing the capacity to 23,000 and we are still at the twenty years ago level. I know the reason why, but it's stupid. For all the sentiment surrounding our old West Stand and old Terrace seating it really is time to think about demolishing it and making the ground more even all round. We've got enough cash in the transfer slush fund to do it, with more coming our way with add ons to be paid, so why not just get on with it? Then we can sell more tickets for the big games by letting the away fans spill over into what will be the new stand (good if we could join it with a curved area above the corner flag. Or we could just do nothing....
To be a pedant, Derby was 2,562, Cardiff was 489. Still a good average from us considering the second half of the season we've had.
Were they the match announcements? nowt on for Cardiff on either site so l took that from twitter at the time. Official site still showing 2,500 for Derby http://www.barnsleyfc.co.uk/fixtures-results/match-report/index.aspx?matchid=3926578.
Thanks for that Gordon. Am I one of the few Reds who still listen to Radio Dee Dars Football Heaven.? There is a contributor who phones up regularly to usually have a dig at the Wendies. His name is " Brian the Blade". Has anyone ever listened to him.? He's always bashing on about the Blunts managers and because of his record in the Meadowhall Sunday League why the owner " Mester" McCabe should sack the incumbent and install him ( Brian ) as manager. Sometimes he goes on about us. Before our game against Millwall in the play off final last season he said that " Barnsley has no chance of going up". His other pet obsession is how many we get at our home games. I've been working on a piece to send to Radio Dee Dar to shut him up once and for all. So for Brian the Blade and others who unfairly knock the Reds here are the findings on the five teams in South Yorkshire. Populations: Sheffield (City) 569,700. Doncaster 302,400 Rotherham 257,300. Barnsley. 231,200 Ave home gates 2016/17. Wendies 26,831. Blunts 21,892. Reds 13,859. Donny 10,084. Millers 9,783 Therefore Percentage support pro- rata to population. Reds 5.99%. Wendies 4.71%. Blunts 3.84%. Millers 3.80%. Donny 3.33% If you factor in the total population of the whole of the Metropolitan area that goes up to form Sheffield- viz: 1,569,068 the Wendies average plummets to 1.71% and the Blunts to 1.40%. I used to work with a Blade who used to service Warnocks car and as such used to occasionally get invited to Bramall Lane on hospitality when Colin was manager. He used to see Brian the Blade in the hospitality area and he said he was always going on about how better he could manage the team and how he was going to protest in the Car Park when things were going well. This lad said he was in the hospitality box every home game which to my mates mind meant he hadn't paid to be there. Don't know if that is still the case but it wouldn't surprise me…
You would have to split the Sheffield population by two. Wednesday's average attendance has lept up this year too, it's been under 22,000 for the previous two seasons.
On those figures that means we have around 12% of our fans travel to away games on an average basis, am I correct? Would be interesting to see how we stack up against other champ clubs in that respect, any number crunchers out there?
Cheers Gordon. I was hoping someone would offer a comment cos I wanted to have the figures sense checked before I send them in. I was thinking it might be best to add ( Wendies 26,831) to Blunts ( 21,892) which gives 48,723 ( which for two massive clubs is rubbish really). Then deduct that from the City population re- 569,700 which gives a total of 520,977. Potentially that figure is the number of people within the area defining the City of Sheffield that could if they wanted to support either Club. If that was a fair way of calculating the final percentage that would up Wendies to 5.15% and the Blunts to 4.20%. If we split the entire indigenous Metro population ( 1,569,068) and divide it by two it comes out at 784,534. We can't count their crowds in twice so if we deduct 26,831 for the Wendies we get 757,703 and 21,892 for the Blunts we get 762,642 which comes out at 3.54% Wendies and 2.97% Blunts. Do you think that's a fair way to look at it bud.? Whichever way we do the calculations our beloved Reds come out as the best supported Club in South Yorkshire.
That's right Deetee. They are all for the Metropolitan Districts as taken from Census figures so technically to ensure it's a level playing field for the two Sheffield clubs we should use the 1,569,068.? Does everybody agree with the final figures cos the last thing I want is a smart ass deedah trying to challenge how the figures have been arrived at.?
With the price of our STs and the offer of the flexi ticket I think in those figures the clubs got the pricing spot on this year in terms of getting as much revenue out of it as they can.
Was going to say last time we went under Lee Jay we took over 3k and the attendance wasnt 10k I don't think.
Sorry about that lads you're right. I've read their figure wrong. Average is 6,053. Thanks for pointing that out. That puts them on 2%. I have checked the others and they look sound.
I think barnsley get better gates than rotherham and donny party due to it been next to wakefield a city with no team. Bigger catchment area than people think.
That's right. I calculate it as being 12.43% which is really good for a Club our size. I would bet Villa, Newcastle and Derby are among the best supported in our league. Sunderland will be up there as one of the best supportednext term. They always bring a good following.
Be some big away followings next year at oakwell with the north stand potentially full by many teams teams who could potentially fill it next season...... Sunderland, villa, leeds, wednesday, blades, derby,Middlesbrough others like hull and forest aswell if they are up there.
