Oh dear, I've quite got to like knocking about without seeing KFC, Macdonalds etc 5hite being strewn all over the place.
Well done mate. If you keep it up, you'll be doing that easily. However, you will have other problems, mainly in the rear-end... My advice is to get a pair of cycling shorts with the padded bit and don't wear underpants. You can wear ordinary shorts over the top so you don't look a t""t..... This year I've cycled 800 miles despite a 2 month complete lay off (I'm 64).
I used to cycle down there as a lad to watch the steam engines at the coking plant. I even got to drive a diesel shunter once, I had to hide as we went past the offices.
Well done mate and just to echo what Brush said, keep it up and you'll be doing that in a couple of hours no sweat.
I've been walking about 10 miles a day with the dogs to get myself out of the house. (I turned on an app on my phone to measure). Some days I do 13, some about 7/8. All on a route from my flat, no driving. Lucky to have a lot of great woods & parks round here in NW Leeds. Feet hurt a bit, but been enjoying it... Mountain bike has been out a bit too, but paths are too busy at all times of day & I don't enjoy cycling on roads much. Since lockdown there are some right 40 year old boy racers driving like pricks, which is shocking when people have to step into the road to pass on some pavements.
That's where Wath marshalling yard was, there was a junction on the Mexbrough road called Wragby (I think), the Midland line from Sheffield split with one branch going through Bolton the other through Manvers to Wath, while the Great Central from Barnsley to Doncaster went underneath. Where I used to go there was an NCB line that went under the Bolton line and over a level crossing.
No it was all diesel there by 1967.... I can remember watching steam engines at Highgate junior shcool, on the Hull and Barnsley line at the bottom of the playing field. I remember a Bolton WMC trip to Blackpool by steam train from Bolton.
I don’t know your age but from experience it’s really easy to build cycling fitness compared to running. It’s tough at the minute due to how busy the paths are but if you stick at it you’ll be averaging over 11mph in no time
Fair play to you ........ I've let myself go so much over the last few months I would struggle with 26 miles now. Regularly did 100 miles a week for 5 years, then climbed off my bike last April and though "I don't like this any more". Don't know what happened - it did me sooooooo much good health wise but now I look at the bike every day and can't contemplate getting back on. 2 years ago I was flying at these distances and speeds :-(
Some going that, I’ve debated getting a proper road bike to try and get my times and distances up but as someone alluded to earlier there is a lot of people driving recklessly at the moment. I like being able to go “off roading” if I need to.
I think Strava & other apps can often be a hinderance. If I’ve not cycled for a few months it really gets me down when I get back on the bike & I’m getting nowhere near my best times. I think you’ve just got to try & forget about times & speeds & enjoy it but I’m as guilty as anybody for not doing that. I’d urge anyone to try & cycle or go for a run or something. I did a lot of walking when we first went into lockdown & although it’s good to get out I think it’s a lot more rewarding when you put a big effort in & get a proper sweat on. It feels like you’ve achieved something.
