Even when I started college in 2008-2009 student nights were still great, used to roll out of Citrus rooms at 6am and hang about town until college started at 8am. Not a fantastic way to approach education mind.
The Ring O Bells. I’m 16 years old and come out of the Gents Into a packed Ring O Bells, and ask the young barmaid, Tracy, if I could to speak to Frank, the Landlord. What do you want him for I can serve you she says. No, I need to speak to Frank thanks Tracy. She goes and gets him. What do you want lad, he says. (In a very hushed voice) Bit of a problem in the Gents Frank. I put some money in the Machine but I didn’t get anything out. Yer what? he says. I put some money in the machine but didn’t get ‘the goods’. TRACY, he shouts, GET DAVE SOME JONNIES WILL YOU THE MACHINE HAS RUN OUT AGAIN. !!! Thanks Frank!!!
Guess my only drinking out time these days = pre match which invariably involves me buying for me, my daughter and nephew. Always seems I come home with no money! Otherwise, my only drinking is at home = wine, which by comparison is very cheap. £7-10 for a night in.
We used to meet No 7, then White Hart, and free style Chennels, King George , Corner Pin, Penny Farthing,Bodega, repeat until we’d had enough
First pub I went in was the Wheatsheaf at tarn end , sadly not there anymore , used to go in from the Boys Club (Lamproom) ,occasionally went to the Moulders . Did that for a few months before getting up enough courage to go into tarn. Then it was start and finish in the King George (before going to the Stables) , with various pubs in between depending on how we felt , always included White Hart ,No7, and Bodega , Changes if there was a band on
First ever drink out was int penny farthing, baby jane by rod stewart ont jukebox whenever i hear it i remember that night. First uns were always there. Then its been a combination of number 7,brownes, bodegas, tommy wallocks, chennels, corner pocket, silvers, then either hedonism or ticket office then theatre. Tried to avoid white hart there was always scrapping cos it was narrow getting in and out and somebody would always start shoving. Happy days though
Not from Barnsley and hardly ever went for a night out, but was rarnd ponte almost every Sat and Sun night without fail in 90s Malt shovel Liquorice Bush Elephant Simbas ABA Bluebell Bass house Shadows (blastaway) Blackymoore Hos Vaults Kilos / Liberty Park
Student night was class when I was going out 06-08. Like you say always busy. We used to go to ice bar as it was the only bar we could guarantee wouldn’t ID us when some of us were still 17 then it was a gamble all night of whether you’d get in bars or not. Used to see former Barnsley players out on student nights pretty often, plenty who didn’t make it but one central midfielder who scored against us at Oakwell recently & a current England right back didn’t too bad from midweek drinking
Birdcage: good place to go if you wanted a fight. Was in there one night when a bloke upended the seven foot plastic palm tree and smashed it over someone's head
Fairest bouncer in the world was Dennis. "Tha's been a bad lad toneet so I'm just gunna give thee a tap" Then he gave the 'bad lad' the requisite tap Very fair was Dennis
It was mine in ‘73. I was so good on the pinball machine that I only ever paid for the first game. I was eventually barred from using it. I also remember it being raided for under-age drinkers, of which I was one. The landlady tipped us off and it was half-empty by the time the police arrived.
Yes great nights! I do recall seeing the England right back and also a young midfielder on loan from Chelsea! I remember Hirsty from Galaxy 105 doing a night at Walkabout and a rather ill fated appearance from Coolio at Escapade... possibly on a Saturday the latter.
Can honestly say I've never been for a proper night out in Barnsley, apart from supporters club reunion in Courthouse, and I've been a reds fan for over 40 years. Always went to Wakey back in the day.
