We were in the seats to the left hand side and that away end looked unbelievable....always remember an old boy climbing up the fence at the front with his flat hat on,singing his heart out !
Whilst I mentioned acknowledging a lot of Liverpool fans applauding us at the end. There was also the nutjacks reaping violence on anyone outside after the game. I vividly remember the picture of the Barnsley fan in the Daily mirror showing his back in the form of a patchwork quilt due to the amount of slashes he got with a Stanley knife. Was loads of rumours of tarn fans looking for revenge at the replay. Don’t think owt transpired. In the service station on the way home it looked like lots had been in a war zone. bloody noses etc. Legend had it that one Liverpool thug got dragged onto one of the busses. Had his trainers taken off him. Then was thrown off the bus when it got back as far as the M1.
It was pretty hairy getting out though with the snow. We were ambushed by 10 locals by the coach - they didn't react too well when 40 miners from Woolley Colliery got off the coach - lol
Dunno about that but a Barnsley lad was slashed on back with a Stanley Knife, was in papers. Led to ill feeling in return at Oakwell. I made the last 10 mins at Anfield. Fog
No. Think he may have fallen out with Hunter at the time. Think he may have played in the replay, though. Will check
No, he was injured. He was fit for the replay, but was on the bench, as Hunter went with the same team as at Anfield.
Remember this, drove to the game remember just getting past a pile up on the M62 before they closed it for recoveries freezing fog that dense my Dad rest his soul was hanging out the car window looking for the exit off the M62 chap who worked for same company as me advised where to turn off and to park in a pub car park and after having a couple of beers before nervously walking up to the ground past a park or allotments, heard someone running up behind us and I pushed my Dad into a gate opening to protect him, turned out to be a Liverpool fan that was scared to walk to the ground on his own and offered to show us the trophy display at the ground in return. Also wasn`t a Barnsley fan slashed with a stanley knife at this game and Liverpool fans were threatened with the same if they came to the replay severely affecting the away support .
I was there and was also 17 at the time. We travelled on one of the Tracky coaches and also got there around half time. Unbelievable support from our fans that night, 17k was just phenomenal. Love to be able to tell people that I’ve seen my team play at Anfield 3 times and never seen them lose. 2 wins and a draw over the last 40 years or so. How many other clubs can say that??!!
I was 12. Went with Pride (Side) of the Road. Coach broke down on the tops and got there at half time. My dad, not a man normally given to such deeds, pissed in his flask so desperate was he by time we arrived at half-time. On way home I fell asleep and got frozen to the window. Will never forget atmosphere in our end that night.
My first away game! Half of school seemed to leave early. We got there in time for kick off, sat in the Kemlyn Rd stand. The away end was rammed. Fantastic atmosphere. After the game, we couldn’t get into the car, the lock was frozen. Spent what seemed like hours trying to stay warm in stanley Park. Didn’t get home until the early hours. Fantastic memories though.
Memories indeed. 1st game my dad missed was Man City at home in the previous round. 3 weeks later he died. My cousin took me to Anfield for the game and we saw the last 20 minutes and I wouldn't have missed it for anything. Nothing comes close to being a Barnsley fan, there's nowt in the world to compare. COYR
Dense fog accidents galore un helpful coppers.. What a night... Colin walker in for the injured Derrick Parker.. I was there... Kid called Duffy from lundwood was the one introduced to Stanley that night.. ( Think he's still working for bsly council on the bins) cut him up bad... don't know about kid with trainers. and M1 .. But I fondly remember one night at Stockport when leaving the ground, we stopped at some traffic lights and a kid about 19 started giving it loads banging kicking the side of the coach threatening us screaming abuse gesturing offering us out telling us what he'd do if we got off the coach... Pmsl.. he soon shut up when two of the lads got out of the emergency door casually walked around the coach grabbed him and man handled him on board.. Between Stockport and coming over the tops he was stripped down to his pants and vest his clothes chucked out via the sky light.. He was chucked off the coach just before the Barnsley border... With a cheery wave and lots of laughter... He was petrified not only because he'd been grabbed but one of the older blokes holding him kept pretending to attempt to kiss him and convinced him he was on a bus full of gay blokes who were all going to Roger him... Lol
i'm yet to hear anyone say they actually saw the full match! i got there at around h/t too, only vivid memories but i know it was bloody cold in car with no heater!
Should have caught the (one of two I believe) 'special' we did & we saw the full match (well if it counts only seeing to the halfway line)
Went with the Travellers Rest Poggy and missed the first 15 minutes. The guy who got slashed right down his back was Graham Linstead, year below me at Broadway.
