Some people on here keep coming up with that phrase. But what does that phrase mean??? Say we went for a like for like replacement for Hourihane - then that would cost Barnsley at least £8 MILLION. I know we sold him for £3 million but that's the current policy of the club to give players away. But a like for like replacement would cost at least £8 million. We can't afford that sort of money. So if we needed a player to replace him that would mean bringing a cheaper player in that needs developing - that takes time. And during that time that player makes mistakes that will result in the club losing the match. So really there's no such thing as a 'like for like player' unless you are willing to fork out the same amount of money to bring one in - or endure seasons of poor results hoping things will improve. Hecky has the unenviable task of putting 'a like for like' SUCCESSFUL SQUAD (not a team, a SQUAD) together in the close season. I would say that's virtually impossible. But if anyone can - Hecky can.
Like for like in our terms means a player with the potential to develop into a player at the same level as the ones we sold. We may not be able to afford the Conor Hourihane we sold to Villa but we can afford a similar one to the one we bought from Plymouth for 250 grand. It's looking into the future and developing and seeing something that you can nurture and improve upon. I don't think we will get near him now but someone like Cameron Mcgheehan looks to have some of those qualities. Sorry for the sensible answer. Sent from my iPad using Barnsley FC BBS Fans Forum
From the last transfer windows, we seem to have two targets. Young, hungry players from non-league or lower leagues, like McDonald, Roberts, Hourihane, and those that seem to have slipped a bit at higher levels, Kwepke and Mowatt. The aim is to give both a shine and hope it works. In most cases, it seems to be, but it won't always. If they can identify the right players for now and for the future and supplement with loans then we should be ok.
I would say... we pick up some broken records, but Hecky polishes out the scratches and converts them onto mp3! If he gets his targets in early, we'll have a team to start the season. In Hecky... we must trust!
Same record - different track. This track is called - 'like for like replacement'. The track has often been mentioned but it's only just now being played.
Like for like means similar to the player you had. So a like for like for Conor Hourihane would be signing a left footed goal scoring central midfielder.
Therefore - your 'like for like replacement' doesn't need to be any good? As long as they are left footed and can score the occasional goal ??? There are hundreds sat in the stands at Oakwell that fit your discription.
Very much doubt that. You've got to be pretty good to be a goal scoring midfielder in the championship. Haven't we got a goal scoring midfielder in Moncur anyway?
I said this in January when people were going on about us not replacing players. Sent from my SM-G850F using Tapatalk
If think many, myself included, saw Moncur's signing as a clue that Hourihane would have left last summer. As it happened, he did another half season with us meaning Moncur didn't get his chance right away. But now he has, he looks like some player. Maybe like for like, maybe not, but if he's the man to fill that void, getting better with more game time and training with the squad, then that's close enough to like for like in my eyes.
Mowatt is not. Replacement for Hourihane he plays a completely different position. He might be a Replacement for Moncur.
