I think the debate is about what the law should be rather than what it currently is.

I agree that she has always been a female mentally, but not physically. It is foreseeable that as awareness and treatment of transgender people (rightfully) improves women's sport will become entirely dominated by transgender athletes. This would lead to women who are born as women having no realistic opportunity to compete.

 

If you look at numbers though, the trans community is extremely small, but yes in real terms it will increase over time. If you then extrapolate numbers who go into sport, its smaller still.

I've spoken to numerous trans people and physical feminine identity is a massive part of their transformation. That tends to conflict with muscularity and participating in sport. For the very small handful of people that we may see in trans sport, I'm on the side of giving them hope and acceptance rather than obstacles.

There could well be a moment where their is a number in sport where legal consideration could perhaps be given, but personally, these people have endured so much to make such a brave change, I don't feel its fair to heap more on them.

On another note.... quick tangent.... I've been pleased to see evidence of a shift in media advertising of late to be much more inclusive.

Tesco at Christmas, McCain about Valentines, HSBC about Brexit and just now a general River Island advert. Nice to see in whats been a pretty inhospitable place the last 18 months or so.

 

I did read an article about a trans competitive runner probably about 15 years ago. The level of testosterone present in her system was measured as she went through the process and it dropped significantly - along with performance (although some of that would be due to post-op recovery). That is just one sport with no contact, but I'm sure we'll see scientific studies into this within the next few years to prove it either way.

For someone who claims to be a right-on leftie you don't half come out with a lot of reactionary crap as spouted by people you usually call Tories, scabs, etc, etc.

It's as if you're pretending to be something you're not.

 

I agree with Farnham, she has every right to be treated as respect and her gender accepted, but in cases like this there is a definite advantage to her, folk are up in arms ( no pun intended) when such as the Russians 'enhance' their women athletes, this would be a natural side effect but surely the theory is the same.
