I'd love to see Crewe's Ben Garratt in Barnsley. He's a great young prospect, three years younger than Davies and I don't imagine we'd have much trouble signing him, seeing how Crewe play in the League Two, although he has just signed a new contract to 2019. If next season we had Garratt and Davies in competition we'd be sorted for years. BTW hi everyone, I'm NorthantsRed, a Red in Northants.
I think he's superb, just suffering from a bit of a lack of confidence after the Wednesday game in my opinion. For about 5 months, October to the Wednesday game I think he was brilliant & had it not been for the Wednesday & Wigan games I think he'd be getting some shouts for player of the season. I think he commands his area well & I rate his kicking overall, far better than Steele's ever was & at least on a par with most at this level.
Just thought I'd bump this thread from April critiquing our goalkeeper. In my opinion since this post the weaknesses highlighted have become more apparent and his strength which is shot stopping has been average at best. He is also well on track to meet the estimated 5-10 serious errors per season.
I think given our transfer policy we won't get a better keeper. Shame he has no competition at all however. If nothing else if we had another decent option I think he could do with taking out of the firing line for a bit.
Got to saying I’ve been done reading in Simon Eastwood at Oxford and they absolutely rave about him. Sounds like he’d be ideal to come in and push Davies and even take the number one spot. Described as a very good all round goalkeeper who is worth at least 10 points a season for them. Sounds like he is carrying an awful defence and digging them out of holes time and time again. Hopefully this one will be sorted soon.
Not confident no. Doubt Davies would be pushed straight out anyway on the back of clean sheets but he’s one more error away from being taken out of the side in my opinion. Just need a good keeper to step in rather than to keep playing a man through bad form.
Wolves keeper on Saturday commanded his area, was really noticeable that anything crossed over that was 8 yards out was claimed by the keeper, easily. Thought at the time that i wished we had a keeper who commanded his area more. Davies was more summed up by the goal that was disallowed, he came, stopped, went back & watched it hit the net, indecision could have cost us a vital point, when he had very little to do really in the game.
I’ve been thinking it for a long time now. He was poor on Saturday but because he got a clean sheet most on here are blind to it. He made a massive error second half with a low driven cross from the right. All he had to do was pounce on it, he almost went for it but then bottled it. The cross flashed straight across the 6 yard box but luckily no wolves players got on the end of it.
I agree with your original post on Davo`s weaknesses and dont think he has improved them any since that time. I get all the he`s young and learning stuff but just wish the same thoughts were afforded to Townsend who I believe is younger, played abart 10 games for us and is already thrown on the scrapheap by the majority of posters. Davies should have been dropped some time ago for me and his constant inclusion in the side hasn`t improved him one bit.
He's a good keeper and I hope he's here for a long time. If he was perfect we would be selling him. We do nowt but highlight our players shortcomings on here at times, but if the players didn't have faults we'd lose them to bigger clubs. We walk a fine line in terms of which players aren't good enough and the ones that are destined for better things. It's as simple as that really.

Didn't want to mention his poor performance saturday as it wouldn't have seemed right after a brilliant point. But he was saved by some shoddy Wolves attacking and our rock solid defence, as on another day we could have lost by three or four. His positional sense needs looking at sharpish. He was lucky their second disallowed effort was offside, as you shouldn't be conceeding a two yard tap in. Numerous balls across the six yard box he was static. That in comparison to Ruddy who with confidence came for everything anywhere near his penalty spot. His communication with his centre halfs wasn't great either. Numerous times it was the fans who had to tell him to come off his line to deal with the ball.
