Disagree with that, Connell, MDG, Pines, Kane, Williams, Phillips I think we could all sell for a profit. We could have sold Kane, Williams, Cadden, Cole start of season or in Jan for money but we chose to keep them, for obvious reasons. Who would have thought we'd have got 3 million for Andersen that first season we saw him play?!? He was abysmal at times.

    Appreciate that, bud:D likewise!

Given the shocking state he found the squad in, I don't think Poya was "as bad" as Schopp. But we didn't have a technical director then. The closest we had had was Dane murphy and he brought in Val and almost got us to the Premier League. The he left and we got Schopp.

Moved to Guiseley from Sheff Weds in 2013, I knew I’d read somewhere he’d been on Sheff Weds books at a Youth level

I'm sure you realise that a football club existed at Oakwell long before this player-trading platform was invented. It's always been a reality that if a player came along who we could sell for a decent fee, and that fee could be reinvested in the team, or perhaps even used just to sustain the club, then it was, albeit reluctantly, accepted. But this feels differently to me. The fact that we have an unbalanced squad, with multiple players out on loan, and a total inability to deploy a plan B, because players appear to be being signed to sort of formula on a scattergun basis, suggests to me that something else is driving things.

Absolutely, but that was in the days where a successful local business man paid the players a reasonable sum of money a week. Not now where unless you are a global billionaire investment group, or an oil backed nation state, you can’t afford to compete in the top division.

Players mentioned in OP have an upward career curve.
We tend to have them when they are lower down the curve but they have their peak years further up the curve after leaving us.

Championship scares the life out of me. We wouldn't have laid a glove on Ipswich last night and I doubt we would have caused Cov any problems either. IF, and it's a big IF,we go up, we simply must recruit players from higher up their career curve.

Football is a business, I get that. Ipswich and some others seem to want to make their dough by rising up the tiers. Others, including us, are content to make on player trading, relying on an annual Mawson, Pinnock, Mads type windfall. Trouble is, every now and then we will buy a batch of duds that won't give us the hoped-for golden goose. And when that happens the future looks bleak for long periods.

Isn’t that goal of every sports team? To reach the pinnacle of their profession!? Obviously there can only ever be 20 teams in the Premier League but when you’ve 20 in the Championship throwing cash at it as well, plus 8-10 in League One and Two, it’s difficult to attract the players that can get us up there on sporting merit.

I’m more concerned about competing at our present level going forward.

I understand that our goal is to buy players cheap and make a profit.

I dont know any board members of any club who can claim to be over knowledgeable about football.
Thats why they employ people who have backgrounds in football to run the proceedings for them.
Barnsley for example have recently appointed 3 new staff members who have been involved with the game and the financial side of things.Their expertise might not show too much until next season given they've only been here 5 minutes.
Although some don't want to admit it since Nareev ,JAQ and the Crynes took over we've got to 2 playoff campaigns in succession.Thats quite an achievement I would say.

The worrying thing for me is for the last 3 seasons our league position has dropped year on year. We seem to have a rebuild every 12/24 months and appoint a poor manager every other appointment. If we don't go up they will be another rebuild.

For years our recruitment was excellent. Player and manager retention was abysmal, but we certainly got talent through the door.

I don't think that's been the case for a while though. The calibre of players signed has been significantly lower with few exceptions and anyone any good still leaves.

Duff's management made quite a few of them look better than they are, Collins didn't repeat that, but still achieved results. I think with a less capable manager we could have really struggled.

I find it very difficult to understand why anyone who has seen our team play believes this.
