Did Richards wife teach at Charter? I'm sure the Mrs Richards library teacher was his wife. She slammed my head onto the table once and slapped me hard in the face whist holding my hair: my crime was tapping my teeth with a pencil.

i never had him for french, i think, but you still see Tom Clamp up and down Sheffield Rd, still looks as he did when he walked into school about 1961.

What kind of abuse are we talking here like? I even had some private tutoring from him when I was doing my GCSE's and he was fine. I understand why he has the nickname basher though because everyone I speak to says the same about him.

Tom Clamp taught maths. A mild mannered guy but you didn’t want to be anywhere near him when he lost it.
His buddy Mr Evans was the French teacher. Spoke it with a Yorkshire accent.

Tommy Clamp was (almost literally) lethal with a board rubber. If you were talking while he was wiping the board he'd turn and chuck it in one sweeping move and hit you bang in the middle of the forehead.

I met Lloyd Evans still at Broadway (Charter as it was by then) 25 years after I left at a parents evening for my son. He recognised me.

I left Broadway in 1969 and remember Basher very well. He’s probably the only one I can remember who was physically abusive and it’s hard to believe he got away with it. With all these historical abuse cases going around now surely there could be something on a vile character like he was

He used to beat kids up, had a scary temper. He had two sets of filing cabinets in his office and he used to rag you in between them banging your head and shoulders on them, left and right. He also used to lock people in a walk in store cupboard (also in his office) for about 30 minutes, bring you out then continue with the filing cabinet treatment.

Got to say I honestly never heard any of the stories while I was there, 1959-63 heard about canings etc, had a few myself and we had a sports teacher, BJ Mcbride who had his "board of education" which was a rounders bat and he used to line his victims up bent over touching their toes, then he'd start at one end and run down the line. The lad first in line got the worst and the lad at the end not quite the worst.

He got me by the hair and repeatedly banged my head against the wall. What had I done , forgot my maths text book
