    It used to be me.

"The pictures and the noise are a force of evidence that football is booming in Barnsley. For the last two hours, the thousands have made the trek from the centre of the town, in an atmosphere whose warmth belonged to an age gone by."

I stand to be proved wrong by our resident statto but I think at some point during that season all the above three were top of league 1?

I remember the first match of 81 82 we beat Shrewsbury 4 0 when I got home I saw that Swansea had beats Leeds 5 1 so Swansea were definitely top that day

Awesome night, we had the best team and incredible support back then, away days were even better, I used to catch the train from home over, had to stop at my Grandma's for night games......rarely missed a match in those days...wonderful times and memories

and we beat them all. Still amazes me how we never got promoted with that team. Maybe if they had the playoffs back then we might have

Although that is the best Barnsley team I've ever seen, sadly the squad wasn't.

Think you're right Kev. Losing Derrick Parker (in the game at Hillsborough, as a result of a bad tackle I think?) was a big blow. Can't remember how long he was out but recall it being 3-4 months? Colin Walker was decent but we definitely missed Dek.

That team had it all - power, pace, multiple players who could beat a man, good in the air, could pass, mix it when needed etc. There were no weak links in the first choice 11 but as you say not enough depth. I may have this completely wrong but I seem to remember we had a poor spell in the new year but just didn't have enough depth to give key players a rest.

Bad tackle from former Red Mick Pickering.

That was another reyt game though. First half: battered them. Went in to the break 1-0 up and should have been more. Think we hit the woodwork. Barra tore future England right back Mel “The Flying Pig” Sterland not one but two new ar$eholes.

Second half they came out like crazy dogs and it wasn’t long before they were 2-1 up. Royston’s Kevin “Ticker” Taylor scored one of the goals I believe.

Think Derrick Parker was injured in the lead up to the equaliser when the ball was played through to the King who finished with his usual style with about ten to go.

Honourable mention to Glyn Riley. Not quite as good as Big Trev or Derrick but always gave everything for his home town club.

Impressive memory mate - I'd forgotten much of that. Good shout too on Glyn Riley, he was a good player and always gave his all. i think of him in the same bracket as Andy Liddle (liddle liddle andy liddle)
