That's what my Londoner uncle said about farms too. I'm meaning just walking to fields and seeing lambs, not visiting a farm especially.
Each to their own I say, we have offices near King’s Cross and whenever I go there two things strike me - the air is so polluted I can taste it and it’s busier than an ants nest on a hot day, no greeting each other with a good morning or an or8. Of course there’s more history ,art and culture in the nations capital. But what there isn’t is the twang of our accent, the warmth of our greetings or the speed of our wit. If you’re happy down south so be it, but please don’t slate our town from the stabbing capital of the Uk. London has it downsides as well as its ups, and I know where I’d rather be.
Maybe you ought to keep off the cocoabanger on a Sunday before criticising your home town. I always say, if you can't handle your ale, keep off it .
Kent and Sussex are very near and it’s field after field, national trust places galore, country pubs galore... if the countryside is what you love there is tonnes of it down here
haha... I’m just warming up... off to bbno tap room when the Mrs finishes her snooze... southerners, eh? ;-)
My grandparents lived in Kent and Essex and yes there is some lovely villages and countryside but for je personally I prefer the wildness of the Dales and the Peaks. I've moved around a lot when I was younger but I feel settled in Barnsley and beyond moving to Italy I cant imagine wanting to move from Yorkshire, unless for family reasons.
There's nowt wrong with being honesick fella. Enjoy bono whatever that is. It'll never beat 'HOME'. You reds !
There's one place I'd actually prefer to live rather than Barnsley. It's called Längenfeld in Ötztal in Austria. It's much better than Barnsley, the mountains in the area are much higher, it snows more, the lift system is much more advanced, and you can eat Schweinshaxe, Kaiserschmarrn or Germknödel at 2000m outside in the sun, while drinking Blauer Zweigelt and yodelling loudly at the mountain goats. Can't do any of that in Barnsley. I blame the council.
I've never heard anyone say they'd prefer to live elsewhere because the lift system is more advanced.
I was born in Dodworth (on Church Hill), lived here all my life, being happy & content to do so, despite job offers presenting me with the opportunity to set up home elsewhere in the country. I'd hope that even my worst enemy wouldn't claim that's made me ignorant, uneducated, unfriendly, bigoted or intolerant. Life in our village suits me perfectly. I appreciate it's not for everyone. For example, our son has lived happily in Chester for years. But there's no sneering condescension from me towards people who think differently.
Take out the drinking or eating time and I could go from my front door to woodland, for a drink in three totally different places, eat a locally sourced meal and back into my house in less than 15 minutes. To add an off-licence in an extra 10 minutes.
I left Barnsley in 1991 but have always returned for footy, friends and family. I’ve spent most of my life in the Dales now but would never call myself a ‘Dalesman’. My 4 kids were brought up here and only one has a connection back to Barnsley (yes that football thing again). I’ve lived in Grimey, Cudeth, Dodeth and Tarn End, obviously the most salubrious parts of the Borough. I’ll always be proud to come from Barnsley or to give it the title the rest of the Country gives it - Baaaaarnsley. The town has given me my values, my ethics, my politics and a value in community and the collective. I’ll always be grateful for that. Of course my liberal values mean I accept it’s fine to criticise Barnsley. Just one caveat. You have to come from the place. Otherwise, shut it or al bray thi.
