For the life of me, I can't understand how anyone from within a Mining Community who remembers Thatchers cruel treatment of the working classes, could have ever voted for her or the modern day Conservative Party. I worked with one such person who had been involved in the 1984 strike. He had retrained, gone to College and got a qualification and secured a well paid job as a Middle manager. He genuinely thought he'd " arrived" and sang the praises of Thatcher and her ilk, for his " second chance". He was a really nice bloke, but no amount of reasoning could convince him that it was his own talent and not the Tories that had got him to where he was.
Well the OP has achieved one thing with this thread. He's finally created one that's made it to two pages. I can see this one getting to nine or ten before being deleted.
This is the crux of it. These people with middling incomes that think they’re in ‘the club’ and stand to gain with Tory power, not understanding the tories couldn’t give a Fck about them save for exploiting their greed for votes. Need a few more 0’s on your income to actually stand to gain anything from them, at the expense of absolutely everyone else. Unfathomable mindset to me but hey ho.
"So God was creating man. And his little assistant came up to him and he said: "Hey, we've got all these bodies left, but we're right out of brains, we're right out of hearts and we're right out of vocal chords." And God said: "**** it! Sew 'em up anyway. Smack smiles on the faces and make them talk out of their arses." And lo, God created the Tory Party."
I’m not sure that’s true. It’s all to do with ethics. My wife and I are high rate tax payers, she’s actually well into the 50% tax bracket and we are both paid up members of the Labour Party and fully back a progressive fairer society. Just because someone earns a decent wage doesn’t automatically mean they become a selfish tw4t. If someone is though, intrinsically selfish and materialistic they will always revert to type and look after themselves politically and economically, it’s the way of the world. There’s lots of people I know though that have become upwardly mobile and built a well paid career that are incredibly left centre who would quite happily pay more taxes to help fund the NHS and local services. Not all middle/higher income people are self obsessed thunder Cnuts.
No Nudger. He was called Lennie and lived in Donny. He'd been a Miner since leaving school and had been in the NUM, but you could never reason with him over his political allegiances. His son worked with us and was as confused as we were with his Dads attitude. Amazing how a modest Semi, wall to wall carpeting, a motor and two weeks in Spain every year skewed his thinking. He really believed that because he'd been brought up in a deprived pit village and ended up in a relatively desirable area of Doncaster, it was all down to the opportunity the Government had given him.
