Votes for Bergkamp & Prosinecki as well from me, too. However, I'd also nominate Graeme Souness. When we played Liverpool in the League Cup Replay back in 1982, Souness simply ran the show. Liverpool played beautiful one touch football that night, with Souness at the heart of it, our players simply couldn't get near them and this was the best Barnsley team I've ever seen. Souness topped it all off by scoring with a superb volley from the edge of the penalty area, when a corner was played directly to him in front of the Ponty End.
It has to be Bergkamp for me too. Prior to seeing him live, I had no idea how much work he put in as well as the most effortless quality. I've still no idea how he managed to find the same top corner of Watsons goal in home and away fixtures with seemingly no backlift or power. I wasn't especially impressed with Vialli. He got 4 goals, granted, but most were on a plate and he didn't have to do that much for it. The other player that probably goes under the radar because it seemed like we never really had any shots at him. David Seaman. He never seemed that big a keeper til you saw him live. He was constant. Quick, got down well, had very long reach and was never flustered. We played Arsenal twice in the prem season and I recall we had them in the League cup and we didn't get close to beating him. Easily the best keeper i've seen us face, though Neville Southall in the 1-0 cup defeat gets honourable mention for the best save i've seen to keep out Paul Futcher of all people.
Chris Morgan. No, hang on, I mean James Beattie. Brilliant up front for the Blunts that season. Scarily it'll be the tenth anniversary of the Morgan-Hume incident in a few weeks.
Best performance at Oakwell for me was Ginola - he was simply a class above ,gliding around the field - he seemed to be a foot taller than everyone else as he was that good. Funny you should mention Portsmouth as the best performance I've seen against us away from home was at Frtaton Park - and it was Robert Prosinecki he scored a hat-trick in a 4-4 draw in 2002. Just editing to add it was a great game at Fratton Park - we scored twice in the last 5 minutes to draw - went into Southsea for the night out in a great mood!
Hate to doubt the oracle but didn’t Banger try to clear a ball and it hit someone’s head, flew straight to Souness who volleyed in ?
It's not how I remember it, mate, but as my family keep telling me, I'm definitely losing my marbles so they'll certainly believe you!!
Ginola for me. Built like a BSH. Balance of a ballerina. Worth the entrance money just to watch him. Mind you, he didn’t like it when Nicky Eaden kicked lumps off him.
Be nice if there was some film of it somewhere. Can’t rely on my memory because I’d have sworn Big Trev’s goal -v- Brighton was from 40 yards.
Prosinecki for me too. Even though I had no idea who he was at the time. I agree with many of the others picked out on here also, in terms of their lasting imprint. I was also once very impressed with Mark Hateley. Who I think was also in a Portsmouth shirt.
