Read a few 'Barnsley' tweets as usual this morning and see comments about Leeds football fans causing a riot.

    Anyone know what happened?

Not great from what I hear. One lad is in hospital in an induced coma. Large sections of the metrodome are shut down today for evidence collection.

    Absolute morons.

So football fans get the blame for trouble at boxing! Surely these are boxing hooligans!

Wait for factual evidence unless you saw it with your own 2 eyes,

I was swimming at the Metrodome last night . Came away about 09:45. All was quiet then with about 20 outside smoking. They were 2 coaches both with 0113 std telephone code. Sure I read in the Chron that the Main Bout was Buster Mallin from Stairfoot and a lad from Denaby. Anyone know who won that one?

My mate Lee Gibbons was meant to be fighting last night but it got cancelled late on. He makes his debut November instead.

No idea what went off last night as I didn't go, once he got cancelled.

An eruption of crowd violence at the Barnsley Metrodome forced a professional boxing show to be abandoned last night (Saturday).

Trouble began when visiting supporters from Leeds, who were seated in a stand, began launching missiles at a smaller group on the floor.

The group reacted on the floor and more chairs and bottles were launched from the elevated position in retaliation. Security were on hand but could do little to stop the violence.

The main hooliganism seemed to be coming from the Leeds-based fans, who identified themselves by singing songs associated with the Leeds United football team and were there to support Damon Jones who was fighting at the time.

At least two people were cut on their heads and police have confiscated recorded footage from Hatton Boxing TV.

The show was stopped three rounds into Jones’ fight with Simone Lucas and called a no contest. Jones had tried his best to calm down his supporters after being handed the microphone by the Master of Ceremonies.

The main event, featuring hometown fighter Matthew Mallin and Denaby’s Adam Jones, was not allowed to go ahead.

Thanks for that. the feckin morons eh. This may make the Boxing authorities think twice before sanctioning fights at the Metrodome or anywhere else in Barnsley again.

with all due respect, it's hardly surprising to hear that people who pay to watch two people fighting, would start fighting with other people paying to watch two people fighting.

Most boxing Tournaments I've watched either live or on TV have been trouble-free. I know it has happened but not that often. So I do find it a little surprising.

I was there last night, ridiculous what happened.Difficult to say who started it but it appeared to be a section of leeds fans who were supporting their home town boxer. The trouble erupted, started with beer being thrown, then it was punches, boots ,chairs, knives, forks the lot.Only half a dozen security on hand, with little or no control to be seen.Police didn't show up until it was all over after the crowd from leeds bolted through a side door..
It had been a great night until the leeds boxer got in the ring, then the crowd from leeds started chanting the all too familiar leeds utd songs and within no time they came marauding down the stand and all hell broke loose.Apparently it has happened before when a leeds fighter was on the bill and last night was never going to be no different.Fu@kin animals.

just seen this report - (more of less same as supertyke posted)

Barnsley show abandoned after crowd trouble

Last night's boxing show at the Barnsley Metrodome ended abruptly after fighting broke out in the crowd half way through Damo Jones's fight with Simeon Lucas. One man is thought to be in intensive care after being attacked in the entrance of the arena afterwards.

Trouble was brewing from the moment that Leeds' Damo Jones entered the ring. His fans and the home-based Barnsley fans started goading each other from the first bell, and things turned ugly in the third round as both sets of fans charged each other. Shocked ringside spectators found themselves keeping one eye on the action and one eye on the scary incidents that were taking place in the stands as they worried for their safety and well-being.

Despite an end of the round plea from Damo for the rioting to stop, the riot continued and got worse and the Barnsley Metrodome was completely destroyed. Fans were throwing anything that they could get their hands on at one another, like seats, advertising boards, bottles, glasses and cans, as several uninvolved spectators were left injured by the flying objects. There were countless trails of blood on the floor as I left the arena to try and get my head around what I had just witnessed.

The police were called to the scene but by the time they arrived, the damage had been done and the fight was abandoned, along with Matthew Mallin and Adam Jones contest for the British Masters light-middleweight title.

The scenes were horrific. There were lots of women and a few young children in the crowd and some of them unfortunately got caught up in the melé.

The whole incident has marred what was a competitive and entertaining show up to that point. Every fight was fairly even and it was just building up nicely to the main event, which the crowd were to be deprived of because of the idiotic actions of a few mindless thugs.

Promoter Carl Greaves and fighter Damo Jones were left shocked and speechless and you have to feel for these two men. Carl had done all the hard work to put on a quality small hall show yet all that hard work was undone by the rioters, and no doubt Carl will now have some questions to answer from the Board.

It is a shame that the incident is being talked about more than the five completed fights that took place.

One man is thought to be in intensive care after being attacked in the entrance of the arena afterwards, and our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family.

The crowd were fighting last Saturday at the Magma in Rotherham, live on Channel 5, it's not that uncommon.
