Hi I'm looking for some info on former Reds striker Brian Joicey Can anyone give me any information about the injury that ended Brian Joicey's career. I understand it happened in an away match at York City in November ? 1979 did it result in some kidney damage or something ? also what fee was paid to Sheffield Wednesday when he signed and any details of his testimonial match against Wednesday. Best Regards Mick
He did damage his kidney in a fog bound 1-0 win at York. That was the reason he retired I think the stroke came after his playing days.
Testimonial Seem to remember going to a testimonial in the late 70's which I'm sure was Joiceys. I think one half was Wednesday 'old boys' versus Barnsley 'old boys'. I recall the game finishing about 12 goals each, and I vaguely seem to remember Mick Channon making an appearance, though I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.
RE: Testimonial Yeah think you are right - I vaguely remember that as well - fairly sure Channon was there. He was another striker who missed chance after chance but stuck in 20+ a season
Joicey Motors On Took a kick to the kidneys and brought on a mild stoke. He later recovered to play centre half for Frickley Ath. Testimonial was against a combinded Sheffield side which the Reds won 7-6 which Mick Channon and David Speddie grabing two each and Allan Clarke hitting a fizzing drive into the Ponte End (Goal of the Game). Here are the details of the game and the curtain raiser. 17-Oct-79 Brian Joicey 5500 ? Signed on a free transfer from Hillsborough. I remember when he was scoring for fun and that lot were sliding towards Division Four and looking for a striker, there was a big cartoon in the Green Un with the caption "No Mr Ashurst, You can't have Brian Joicey Back". Deadly from the penalty spot and from twelve yards only rivaled by Neil Redfearn.
Thanks a lot Guys and Gals. Read the Joicey article that you've help make here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Joicey Best Regards Mick BTW I'm a Wednesday fan - Sorry
He collapsed on the field in the match against York. He was taken to hospital when initial tests indicated kidney damage. It was announced a few days later that the first diagnosis was wrong and he had sufferred a (minor) stroke. Scored 26 goals in 46 league games plus a hat-trick in FA Cup against Boston in 1976/77. His efforts for the Reds are generally sadly overlooked or underestimated.
He scored a hat-trick against Halifax in the first League match of 78/9 - Alan Clarke's first League match in charge. One of the goals was a penalty which he took, saved by the keeper but he got to the rebound first to stick it away.
The penalty was the winner in the last minute. It changed a drab draw into a win and we went on to win the first five games and eventually promotion. Joicey was a matchwinner. He would be worth a fortune today.
Jesus saves ... Joicey scores on the rebound Legend Replaced by Derek Bell - who wasn't bad either....
