I think I may be having my ‘I agree with a nick Clegg’ moment. Putting aside the debate about Hammill, i’d totally agree with Nudger’s last sentence. If a player is good enough, it doesn’t matter how old he is. And that includes being 27, 28, etc....
Another short memory. It was last season. Hammill decision could easily cost us. And if that is the club policy of offloading older players then us fans will just have to accept that we will be playing with a handicap.
No it doesn't apply to all players moving from one league into a higher league. Luton Town this season. Back to back promotions no doubt. I wouldn't say those players who got them up from league two are having LESS impact this season at all. Quite the contrary.
So if we’d had an Aiden McGeady all season we’d not have drawn so many games? And won more? Sunderland have Aiden McGeady. And have drawn three more games, won three less. We didn’t need any more creativity against Coventry. Just needed to defend properly - I never thought that would be a downfall for us in any game this season. And as for Adam Hammill, I loved him. I loved Ronnie Glavin, Neil Redfearn, Craig Hignett, loads of others too. Wouldn’t have them in the team now though, as they haven’t got it anymore. He was absolutely woeful for Scunthorpe at Oakwell, and he can’t get in their team now. He wouldn’t get in our team.
I didn't make a comment about 'a league one player' having less impact as far as I'm aware. I was referring to Hamill in isolation, in keeping with the subject of the thread, but as you ask, no it doesn't apply to all players. A large number of our players are snapped up from lower league and excel. It's how we do our business. Winall, Hourihane, Scowen, Roberts, Mawson, etc etc etc all made the step up.
It does. Your argument is saying that the Luton players found it more difficult playing teams in League 2.
It doesn't. I was challenging your comment about 'a player having less impact when moving from one league into a higher league is laughable - doesn’t that apply to ALL players.' My argument was saying that those Luton players that got promoted from league two aren't having 'less impact', if anything they are having more, as the transition from a league two promotion to a league one promotion has been seemless. So it doesn't apply to ALL players, because if it did those players that got promoted from league two, by your theory, would be having 'less impact' in league one, which they are not.
They must have done. They finished 2nd with 88 points. They'll probably win this league with 90odd this season. I
In your world sheep probably do live in Burrows, and as they crawl out of their burrows they look up into the sky and they are comforted by the familiar sight of pigs hovering and ready to swoop on their favourite prey of the lesser spotted miniature Unicorn
Luton players will find it easier in the Championship then ??? Obviously there’s less resistance in the Championship.
The fact is that we'll never know if Hammill would have had a good season at Oakwell or not. To suggest that he wouldn't, just because it's not working out for him at Scunthorpe is being a tad blinkered. Some players are right for some clubs and wrong for others. One thing I do believe is that, had Hammill been playing for us yesterday, Ben Williams wouldn't have been so bereft of cover. Would it have affected the result? Your guess is as good as mine. But the ship has sailed. Time to let it go and remember the Hammill highlights with fondness. COYR. Onward and - fingers crossed - upwards.
Not necessarily. I was going on the facts of Luton in league two last season and in league one this season to disprove your theory about 'a player having less impact when moving from one league into a higher league is laughable - doesn’t that apply to ALL players.' But I suppose a recent example of a team rising up through the leagues would be AFC Bournemouth. It can be done. But it's never 'easier', I wouldn't use that term as you have done. I just wouldn't say (as you did) that players have 'less impact' in a higher league, my examples prove that is a wrongful assumption.
It's not though. If you read the original post it's about hammill being our main man like McGeady is for Sunderland. I'd have been quite happy for him still to be here as a squad player, but don't see him lighting up the league like he did 3 years ago.
We've only sold Potts and Moncur and allowed Isgrove to go out on loan. I don't think we've missed Potts. Lutons manager has said that Moncur isn't fit enough to play games and isgrove is always injured. If anythings going to cost us, it's not bringing in a few more players. Moores injury is the big one, and that's where we're really short.
