I think the 31 starts is a bit of a false stat to say we used 6 strikers most games. Had we not swapped the front three every game after 60 mins he wouldn't have made 10 starts.
Its a considerable problem if you buy significant numbers of "hopefuls". Not all are going to come off and getting rid of them is painful. Its subjective how people judge players and if their time at a club is positive or negative. But given our owners have made such a big deal of player transactions, any that are signed to derive profit from, and any that fail to do so have to be considered failures. Schmidt, Thomas, Miller, probably Chaplin and potentially a couple of others will all sadly fall into that category and will have cost the club a few million in the process.
Agree, it's a gamble. Nothing against the lad, just seems very lightweight at this level and dont think he cuts the mustard. Would be ok in League 2 I reckon.
Reminds me of Dagnall, honest toiler with some assets, but not someone who's going to help us kick on next season.
Sad that Chaplin is leaving. I think Miller and Vic should have been shown the door first. Good luck at Ipswich, Conor!
https://footballleagueworld.co.uk/i...rike-transfer-deal-with-barnsley-the-verdict/ Higher six figure maybe seven figure. If we get a million pounds for him that would be cracking business.
Is Cole better than Chaplin tho? Im not so sure he is, so whats point in bringin in Cole and floggin Chaplin, reckon Coles another gamble.
I think a front three of Chaplin, Woodrow and Morris would've been pretty decent. Will have to see what Cole and any other new forwards we bring in offer.
Does this mean we'll get numerous "Chaplin scores again" threads every time he scores for Ipswich and we fail to score?
It would be fairly stunning and I dont for one minute believe we are talking that sort of cash. If we can get back the around 200K I believe we paid for him that would be decent - not sure we should be selling for less than that - he is still a useful squad player for sure Victor and Miller should go first
I thought the implied fee for Chaplin was around £1m-£1.2m? That may include bonuses, but I doubt it was anywhere near £200k range, the season before we were widely suggested to have bid £500-600k but Portsmouth wouldn't sell to us.
Seems a lovely bloke, works hard and also a decent finisher. However, I get the impression that due to his lack of pace and inability to beat a man, he's more suited to playing in a front two, as opposed to wide in a front three. Would rather see players like Vic leave before Chaplin. However, if we are bringing in another two then I can see the sense behind cashing in on him.
I am reading where some are saying we should move on Vic & Miller before Chaplin to which I do not disagree , however I have pointed this out many times before that you can only move a player on if someone wants them & there lies the problem .
I quite like Chaplin but he certainly didn’t score enough last season, although not sure the style of play particularly suited him in all fairness. It may have just been a purple patch but his spell in those games in November/December 2 seasons ago arguably kept us up. He also delivered a shirt (along with Ben Williams) that season and seemed like a decent guy. If he does indeed go, I’ll wish him all the best.
