Good morning everyone, I have lived in London for around 35 years now and my son who is now 26 has supported Chelsea since he was about 6 much to my annoyance, - having watched Chelsea thump the reds in September he was expecting a similar outcome for the game at Oakwell a few weeks back - I called him after the game to get his take on it and he said he couldn't believe Barnsley were not top of the league on that performance and basically concluded that the best side lost - on the strength of that he placed a rather large bet at 9/2 on the reds beating Brentford, as did I, although my bet was significantly less than 3 figures, unlike his - needless to say it made for a nice finish to the week, even though we lost - After this game the reds have gone from strength to strength and I feel momentum is now with them, they all know the system and commit to it 100pct which makes them a very difficult side to play against - if we can keep injury free and keep key players I see them making the playoffs, just wondering what you guys think??
The Chelsea game wasn't too dissimilar to Leeds away last year, both in terms of the game and the impact of it. Unlucky to lose 1-0, but gave us confidence in following games. I also think the Derby game being postponed was a help. We'd come off two disappointing results after a tough start to the year, that postponement gave us a chance to reset.
Great post Mark, and you are your son are right, the best team did lose against Chelsea. I worked down south for over 25 years, and I have ex-colleagues (Reading, Chelsea and Arsenal) all texting me to say how great we played. High praise indeed. The squad is playing as a unit under VI and he's got everyone on board. We're certainly heading in an upwards direction. Will we make the playoffs? Another great question. I don't know, but what I do know is we need to keep Valerien. I love this guy and if he stays a couple of years then the sky's the limit, I know it is. It's the same feeling as under Danny mid 90s, I knew we were going to do it back then, just I know we're going to do it under VI. If we convince him to stay 2 more years.
I'd like to do it this season. A lot can change during the summer. Yes the coach and system are reaping the rewards but you only need a couple of duffers brought in if Mowatt and Woodrow depart to be back to square one.
I agree, take the chance while it's there. Always believed that, however - I'd still take where we are now after the great escape last July, and have a proper go at it next season.
I remember reading and posting in the Guardian comments section after the Leeds game and in the pre-season preview article. Leeds fans were (a) impressed with how we played against them and (b) convinced we were in with a shout of the play-offs this season.
I’ve never been a gambler but I dabbled on Betway a few years ago. It was good fun betting on match results, no more than a pound or two, and who’s going to win the next set at some obscure tennis event the other side of the world. I always set limits like I’ll credit £25 to the account this month and no more. I would mostly lose but what a thrill when bets were won and the balance went up a few quid. There’s nothing wrong with betting if you set your limits, and stick to them.
I,ve been critical of the owners since they arrived, but i think we had a great transfer window and the owners may now be daring to dream of the promised land, theres no doubt that they,re smart cookies and i think they,ll do all they can to hold onto our players, if the player wants to leave though theres not a lot they can do and if their heart isn,t in the club i,d rather let them go...
Mowatt would be a big loss, and very difficult to replace, especially if Styles is sold. If we sold Woodrow though, could he be the equivalent of selling Payton in 96?
I really can't see us keeping VI, unless we do the impossible. We are Barnsley, from Oakwell. (Sung in a Rod Stewart refrain). It's still fun though init.
Thanks TYKE67 and agree re big Val - Huge game tonight, not sure if Barnsley have ever won 6 in a row, perhaps you can enlighten me?
I am with you on this matey - very rare I bet more than a few quid but my son is on big money so I guess it is all relative at the end of the day
Lol - I know what you mean DT - I hated London when I first started living there - the pace of it was hard to adjust to but I soon learned to love it - plenty to do and lots to see - having said that me and the Mrs are now thinking of leaving for a quieter life and more greenery - the buzz is good when you are younger but when you are getting on a bit as we are it does start to lose its allure - The dales is great (I am assuming you are from there?) - my Mum used to live in Hebdon near Grassington many years ago - not sure where we will end up, the Mrs is from Norfolk so it will probably be either there or Yorkshire - current favourite is Beverley. - all the best
Just tell her. It’ll tek thi forever to get tut games. From Norfolk.( I think I’d lose the Will ) . London is much easier and quicker. Beverley better still. Plenty of greenery on outskirts of tarn n’all.
