I've only used a cheque once in the last few years and that was enforced by financial protocol. I always use a fountain pen though even when not writing cheques.
When my dad was self employed, after he had paid his relevant taxes for the year, they sent him a further demand for £0.00. After a few threats of fines and whatnot for non payment, he went into the tax office with his demand and wrote a cheque to the lady in there for £0.00. This was refused as they only accepted payments through the post so he had to post the cheque on his way home from town.
