Oh dear ............Is this a massive sign for all our futures across the world?
China out pricing us on every industry? What do we actually produce on any scale these days?
Feel for all those involved in our country.

But a certain govt of our nation decided to we needed to be a non-manufacturing nation and championed the Service industry as our main industry.
We only have ourselves to blame.

I agree .......what a great shame for all the skilled workers we have produced.
Suppose the answer is we have to adapt ad move on and re invent ourselves to mirror the needs of the world.
How long will it be before we are out produced or out skilled and just..... under priced, in the service industry!

there should be no need to adapt and move on,not when we still use any of the products who's manufacturing has simply moved to countries where companies have the advantage of poor safety records and paying their employees nowt a yard.
we shouldnt be pandering to the chinese,America has a 250% import levy on chinese steel and the sole reason is to keep their own in jobs, the same should happen here

We should put large import duties on goods from East Asia. The container ships that bring these goods (like cruise ships) pollute the planet at a far greater rate than motor cars. A pollution tax might discourage people like Dyson to build his goods in the UK. Also unions and workers should be more realistic in their wage expectations.

Formally worked. In the steel industry
China does not make the high tech steel that goes to Nasa for satalites ect or what is needed to be critically high tech in the nuclear industry or airccraft or Automative. We do at Stocksbridge.
.Germany can but same as all major steel producers they subsisidise there energy costs through there Goverment. and thats all big steel makers In all countries worldwide.
    We dont .

there are two reasons that in the main are why we cant compete with china A many of their industries are nationalised and receive huge support via the government in the form of subsidies and B,their wages to the common man are a pittance,in fact many at the bottom rung have all on surviving,

saying that we cant compete is just a sweeping generalisation used particularly by groups like the tory party,it makes it sound like our people are **** and have no work ethic, they did it with us at the pit and its makes my blood boil.

the moral question isnt paying more for british good,it paying less for goods from an exploited workforce.

countries like ours have minimum standards for their workforce which creates a unfair playing field when competing globally,if i were in charge i'd hit all imports from countries like china with a huge import tax to make up for the difference in overheads that british companies face...thing is this will never happen because too many bigwigs in this country have interests far eastern countries.

Pretty much all the service industries are moving to Eastern Europe or India - particularly non-government IT jobs for the big outsourcers. Which is strange when you consider that wage inflation in Mumbai is running in double-digits annually, so India is already heading towards pricing itself out of the equation.
