Hmmm, that sounds odd Never a dull moment eh? Ultimately, the club had little or no choice IMO. Our debts are anything up to £60m (not for a moment do I believe it's that much btw) depending on who you believe - and we are still losing money at an alarming rate. The Malaysians have invested heavily so far and own 49% of the club - they are now going to take overall control of the club by turning the debt into equity by converting it into shares. Basically, we will be debt-free. They are also improving the infrastructure from top to bottom - and it was pretty damn good anyway. I don't want to play in red (no offence btw :biggrin but if that's the price we pay for the future of the club I'll go along with it, however reluctantly. The badge? That's shocking. But at the end of the day we change kit(s) every year and have changed our badge at least 6 times since I've been following them. I don't care what division we're in, I just want to be able to watch my club & I'm not sure how much longer I would have been able to without this investment - and there aren't too many people clambering over each other to invest in football clubs these days.
No, not an the cards at all apparently. They are looking to increase capacity of the ground though by completing the second tier all round (a relatively simple task apparently as it was all included in the original planning). Seems mad when we don't sell out every week - but they're looking to the future when the financial fair play rules come in & the more money you can potentially get in the better.
Obviously the new investors have got hold of the Welsh dragon logo and turned it into their own advantage.........smart move Wish we had directors that could see the advantages wrapped up in the name 'TYKE'..........but they obviously can't
I hope it all goes well for you and this is not just idea that's going to back fire on the fans, I dont think i would like the idea of change but if it's for the best of the club then some times changes must be done
They're trying to emphasise the Dragon because it is steeped into the history out there. The main guy, Vincent Tan, is a billionaire so I'm assuming he knows that market better than me.
I agree to some extent- why don't Radio Dee Dah call us Tykes instead of Reds which is much more original? but there is a massive difference in terms of exploiting the tyke thing. Cardiff is the capital city of Wales, we aren't anywhere near comparable in Yorkshire. York City on the other hand...
Personally, I'm willing to take the chance because if these investors had turned their backs and called in their debt we would have closed overnight. They've been here a while now, not taken a penny whilst pouring millions in, have paid off existing debtors including many small local businesses and have done exactly what they've said they would.
change the strip, change the name, change the venue by relocating how is that good for bfc watching the blue tykes play in donny or ?ffs
Sorry Jeff, old mate But I'd hate for something similar to happen to my club. Once new owners start changing the traditions of a club in this manner, there's no knowing where it'll end and absolutely no guarantees there'll be any success. If a club's colours are altered, then why not move the ground to a new site, outside the town or city? Once that's done, why not change the name of the club? Welcome to the world of Football Franchise, the beloved creation of MK Dons and the NFL. All the soul and character of the original club sucked out by soulless, heartless money men who know the cost of everything and the value of nothing. I'm an old fashioned, traditionalist fan of my club, who still maintains an affinity with it, even if things aren't currently perfect at Oakwell. Some fans wouldn't have a problem if our club moved to a new ground in, say, Wakefield, called themselves Wakefield City & played in an all blue strip, as long as there'd be some money in it. It WOULD be a problem for me, it wouldn't be Barnsley. Perhaps I'm out of touch with modern thinking, that if something's new it must be for the better.
Re: Sorry Jeff, old mate You're not out of touch Kev, your post is spot on in my humble opinion but maybe I'm also out of touch.
I agree, if too much changes it would no longer be Barnsley FC I was watching so I wouldn't go, simple as that.
I think you've been brain washed, mate. You're accepting a bloke with no ties to the club from the other end of the Earth coming in and trampling on everything your club stands for in exchange for a few quid. Not for me, thanks.
I miss a few (Rotherham is one) due to my holiday. I think I will be going to these... Doncaster / Crewe / Bradford.
