    When I press the ampersand key I get speech mark and when I press speech mark I get the ampersand. Not sure how this happened but how can I put it right.

    I think you've changed the settings to US keyboard.

    Don't know the path to change it, but it is quite easy

    Control Panel - regional settings - keyboard.

    It may be a little different depending on what o/s you're using but you'll find it in the control panel.
