That's not always true , a lack of information and media blackouts can reflect how a country feels about their leader. No one mourns a leader quite like North Korea
I've been to Cuba. Proper Cuba, not the beach resorts. People there are realistic about what's happened there. They know their system has been far from perfect and they want change. They also know the US have despicably tried to ruin them. They aren't living in a North Korea like bubble. And they did seem to respect Castro for what he'd tried to do even if it didn't work or wasn't allowed to work.
You're joking right? They'd be out in the streets celebrating like the Cubans in Miami but they still live under a dictatorship, if they did that they'd be tortured and locked up.
There's plenty of proof, he hated homosexuals, he was also a racist, blacks and gays were treated terribly under his regime. Ironic that the left are lauding him therefore, or is it just that left-wing hypocrisy yet again?
I think like all leaders some loved him, some didnt' He delivered education and healthcare - and queues. The people I met - appreciated the fact they didn't quite starve - that unlike their neighbours in Espanyol - they didn't suffer the regular violence, lack of education and exploitation. However the dentist who made more money driving our taxi and the nurse who made more money as a chambermaid - and those in Havana who spat at the mention of his name - (maybe for effect in front of the tourists) they believed it was time for the country to move on and Castro had done all he can for the country. I think he did a great job - If I had to live in any of the Carribean Islands - Cuba would not have been the worst one to choose if you're poor - ask the Haitians. But it's not the best one to live on if you've got ambition. RIP castro. On balance you probably did more good than bad.
I think you'll find the bulk of the torturing in Cuba goes on in the south of the island, errr what's it called now......oh yeah....Guantanamo Bay.
I got married in Cuba, we spent some time visiting different parts. The cubans loved Fidel, he was a hero. Maybe they were a little brain washed,
