Pppppppppps. I don't give a rats arse about purple flowers, or Ed Sheehan or Coldplay. You need to get out more and stop getting outraged at something that doesn't need you to.

Thought & hoped this would create some debate, as I was a bit flabbergasted they were "indie".

Firstly they are both signed to major labels. (Coldplay's first 2 eps were on an indie).

Secondly I thought the idea of being indie / alternative was to oppose the mainstream?

Sometimes artists sell massively & take the mainstream with them, wilst being truly different, like Bowie / Smiths / Talking Heads / Jam / Pistols / Prodigy / Pulp ... Coldplay & Ed Sheerbum ?

Thinking Sheeran or Coldplay are **** and that those who like them are musical imbeciles isn't quite the same thing as homophobia ST. I do hope you're analogy was tongue-in-cheek.

PS. Didn't you post recently that you liked One Direction?

Coldplay released their first ep on fierce panda if I remember correctly, probably about as indir as you get I guess! And stock aitken and Waterman were indie too! The indie top 20 compilations on beechwood music were fantastic in the early 90's

My point wasn't Ed Sheeren & Coldplay are ****. (I may think that, but that wasn't the tone of the post.) The big thing was they were "indie" (i.e. alternative)

i.e. Music you would hide from your mum, like my Slaughter & the dogs / Electric Chairs 7 inches in the 70's

Ed Sheeran isn't indie (and he plays a child's guitar).

    Coldplay maybe were indie once.

I agreed with your original point but I ended up replying to ST's reply to Pompey Red. I would say though that I also think there is a difference between alternative and indie, or mainstream indie anyway.

Agreed. But they were never vanilla like those groups & their groundbreaking LP ( the one I prefer, although Seamonsters is great too), came out on Cooking Vinyl, via Reception Records, a Leeds Label

Agree. Technically indie means independent, like Factory, Rough Trade, 4AD.

Alternative, means opposite to the mainstream. Could be owt from Bowie to Skrillex.

Coldplay & Sheeran don't really tick either box.

Good luck to 'em there is worse music out there like Nicky Minaj & George Ezra.

You're not wrong but the band I'm thinking of were as infamous as they were popular and a bit style over substance.
