You referred to some of our Premiership team who were meh who played against better teams than they have in the French league. Tinkler played in Serie A prior to joining us in 97. I can’t think of many others who played in our Premiership team who had played against better teams than they have in Ligue 1 who were “meh”.
Soccerway, Wikipedia etc have him down as being a midfielder. He's represented Congo at U 20 level apparently. https://us.soccerway.com/teams/france/amiens-sporting-club-football/908/
That’s all we can ever hope for with every signing. I genuinely don’t know who people would be happy with. By the sounds of it people want us to go back to signing the Leroy Lita, Keith Tracey and Marcus Tudgays of the world. Then they’d moan again when they’re appalling like they usually are.
My mate still sniggers about Keith Treacy. He went with me to watch us at Crewe and thought it was the wind inflating his shirt til he realised he was just overweight and pretty slow.
I think you've wrongly interpreted what l meant. That Premiership squad during that season played against the likes of Man U, Chelsea, Liverpool (better than French teams) etc etc so if we're judging players on who they've played against l can give you a list of "meh" players like Scott Jones, Krizan, Markstedt, Ten Huevel, Hristov, Tinkler
Why do you have to get uppity? I haven’t said I’m not happy; I’ve said I’ve no idea who he is or what he has done and also the fact that he’s played against “top” teams is largely irrelevant. Bringing Lita et al up is frankly, silly. It’s like the only choice is punts from abroad/below or past it journey men. There’s got to be a middle option.
If you are referring to the potential signing with this, with a bit of digging I've figured it out. I'd consider this exciting considering the caliber at which he's been playing at.
I wrongly assumed based on your initial “meh” comment that you were comparing who this potential signing had played against in Ligue 1 as opppsed to who our Premiership squad had played against prior to signing for us, hence the Tinkler response.
Beat me to it Redstar, if you're not happy with those players then I'll present to you the worst we've had and who have cost the most. No middle ground as per. Next question, well give us a name...
From my very limited knowledge looks a good player with the potential to be a success for us. It will of course not be straightforward to go to live in a different country and adjust to a different league. Some succeed straight away. Most have an adjustment period. Some fail. Just like U.K. based signings. I do love the argument that signing players of any experience means that you want us to sign Treacy, or Lita or Tudgay. Completely and fairly idiotically ignores players like Glavin, Redfearn , Hignett, Ward, Futcher etc ad infinitum. It’s about balance.
I’m not getting uppity. It isn’t silly. We simply cannot sign form players who are currently playing at Championship level and above. We can sign players who used to be good at Championship level. But that never worked in the long run. So we’ve stopped that. We can sign players with potential to play at Championship level. In the summer we targeted mainly players who we new would take a fair amount of development. This window we are trying to sign players who are as close to what we can possible get of being capable of stepping straight into the Championship.
Nail on the head with that first paragraph Jimmy, look at Thiam, still not settled in yet. It's not different to the players we signed in the summer, neither ready and have to adjust.
Really exciting signing in my opinion. Young winger who is seemingly performing well in ligue 1, looks like he could be a real asset. Hope it comes off.
Great examples there. The most recent one what 18 years ago? Embarrassing. Name a player of that quality we can sign now. Oh wait.. I asked you to do that before and you couldn’t.
I'd say that, at the level we're playing at now 95% of the players we've EVER signed have been gambles. Young or old, experienced or not. We've never had the money to buy guaranteed quality. Some work, some don't. David Currie would have been dismissed before kicking a ball because he came from Division Four. Others from that level haven't worked. Like I say, it's a gamble. It's ridiculous to write them off or big them up until they've had a chance to prove themselves.
Of course we’ve signed players who “used to be good” that have worked John Hendrie and Craig Hignett to name but two. What we are saying now is we’ve been burnt by a couple so will keep signing potential, knowing full well 50% or so will fall by the wayside, and ignore any other options. And ignore the (at best) 50% we have to chuck away because they were a punt too far...
